I need to put a new pen for my two dogs as the one i have has seen better days.

I am thinking of getting 7 construction gates to make two separate pens and put a kennel in each on top of a slab of concrete. Would this be sufficient.

they are a pointer and a springer and get a good long run (approx 45 mins to an hour) every day on the farm.

Why are you seperating the dogs, are they a dog and bitch?

the pointer always tries to take the springers food - I have to stand there while they eat.:mad:

the construction panels are grand for some dogs, but one of my springers kept eating his way through them before so i had to build him a proper pin. when I had that done i had to put a roof on it because he then trained himself to climb like a cat! anyway panels are grand and cheap too compared to a proper pin but you run the risk of your dog breaking out because the bars on the panels are weak enough.. you may go to a lot of hassle putting the pin up and then discover its not good enough. IMO your better off doing a proper job from the start.;)

Your definatly better off doin a proper job from the start. I used them before aswell and my springer broke out after a few days. They look brutal aswell to be fair. I'm starting work soon on my new pen. It has taken me numerous half assed attempts at a pen to realise I should just do it right!

the panels work for some dogs, depends what the dogs are like. i had to mesh the panels up well to stop mine getting out. have a look at the dog run thread for ideas

Same as gary here, springer pushed through the wire, i also put chain link around like the pic above but he just kept pulling it and pushing his way out. ended up with a sore nose and few cuts down his face, lucky he didnt damage an eye!! im sure the two dogs beside each other would be grand though.

have kinda decided now to do a block wall on three sides with steel mesh type on the other side.

it will be lifetime job then and will prob even roof it with a cubicle (by returning a block section) for lying.

going to dig a soak pit adjacent to it with a gulley underneath to allow power washing the house out.

I have a drain on the outside of my run going along the length of the run it goes to a gully which is connected to the sewer, if I was to change anything I would have the drain on the inside of the fence, it would just be cleaner. Also make sure there is a fall from the back of the run to the drain/gully and make the finish on the concrete as smooth as you can.

I thought long & hard about this & came to the same conclusion.
I also put the drains to the centre with falls from outside in as well as from the shed towards the camera. I will be adding a gully trap to the end & waste pipe to take the water away. Will post final pics when my mesh arrives.
Went for 30N concrete to take the abuse of a power washer.
For finish I went for bull float as opposed to powerfloat as the smoother the easier to clean but too smooth & would be like an ice rink. The bull float is a happy medium IMO.

As for roofing I have moved away from the idea of it & walls. I want the wind blowing through the run drying it off. Already this dries very fast holds no water at all. Their houses will keep them dry.

Thats my run when it was built first, the smoother the concrete the better. Easier to clean and no nasty smells.
