Holestine calves are weaned and healthy. Currently eating high protein nuts, straw, silage & water. How can I boost nutrition, health, development for calving down at two years old.

Those poor old Holsteins need the meal:P:P

I would suggest get out on your best grass keep 1kg into them graze in front of your cows or bulling heifers and move every 3-4 days more often if you can.

This way they get the choice grass and do not need to graze near the soil reducing parasite up take. No need for troughs meal can be thrown on the ground once they get in on it.

Of course you could have Jex calves and they will only need meal in the back end as they are really good at utalising grass:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Was going to bite back de laval but ill leave it!!re calves I'd take what you are suggesting, calves ahead of cows(it's bulling heifers for me)keep a kg of a
16 to 18% nut into them and I also give them an all sure trace bolus(for calves) with first worm dose in early June.

Would worry about tramping and contamination. But I suppose it would recover. Interesting.

Whats a trace bolus? Which one would you recommend and why?

Gave all our animals trace boluses last year. I was happy enough with them. its very hard to see the benefit on the animals but they did thrive alright for the year that was in it.
All sure trace boluses they were called. 1 to everything bar cows they got 2. i wouldnt like to be giving them to young calves though, seem a bit big to be pushing down there throat.

Sorry for the non reply dungfly.A trace bolus is just that a bolus containing chelated copper selenium cobalt zinc iodine etc.Allsure do a much smaller bolus specifically for calves. Its just like a big tablet which youd take yourself.I find it gives calves a kick on as well as other management aids like regular movement,Good quality meal and reegular dosing

I am also interested in parasite treatments for calves. I have created a new thread. All welcome to contribute.
