Studying Abroad? How do you do it?

    Im doing undenominated science, and I would like to go to germany if possible for a year or just a semester. I have absolutely no idea if this is possible. There is no official erasmus with the course, so this would mean.. well it doesnt make things easy. It might even make thins impossible, im not sure.

    Does anyone have any info on studying abroad or know who i should be talking to about this? surely there are programmes or exchanges i can enrole in..?

    Currently my leads are;
    DAAD - some kind of scholarship programme i fount in the german dept of the arts millenium building. Ive had a look around their website and their are some encouring words but im lacking a basic grasp of who is eligible what exactly it is and how to apply.
    Biotechnology have a semester abroad, perhaps if the semester isint entirely bio tech based i could hop on their programme.
    Ask the dean of science or more likely the su, but i think they are both closed for summer?

    So not really knowing where to look i came here in the hopes someone can shine some light on the topic for me.
    I eagerly wait in hope.

    I did undenominated myself, in third biochem they offered the opportunity of a semester abroad in Hong Kong last year for the two best students. I would simply talk to your course coordinator for the subject you want to study abroad. They would know if this is possible and what would need to be done. In my four years of the course I never heard of anyone going abroad for a year except the two in biochem in third year, but that not to say it's never happened or can't happen.

    I did my undergraduate in Physics at NUIG, and I also really wanted to get some experience abroad. I ended up spending a summer in Finland on a research placement, through the exchange programme (IAESTE). The application deadline is generally quite early (like December for the following summer) so it's good to be aware of that.

    I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend the exchange program to others, it was a really great experience, and there's lots of different countries available for Irish students, depending on the year. As for an exchange during the academic year, I'm not sure how easy it is for science students.. In Germany I imagine that a large majority of their undergraduate courses are through German, so unless you're fluent this might be a bit prohibitive.

    That's correct, I'm out here with two girls from biochem, but they are only here for this semester. I'll second what you said about just talking to the course coordinator also.

    When I was offered all of this study abroad lark the main emphasis was maybe going to the States as my course had about four partnering courses in four different Universities there, but there was also an opportunity to go to Sweden - which I was definitely interested in going to - England, and France also, and then Hong Kong came up so I figured I couldn't let that pass up and I eventually came here.

    Behind all that, there was ways where I could widdle out openings to other countries through the CS/IT course and also the B.Comm course as I could do cross-overs. Because those programmes are more general and more populated than what I do they could work out something with partner colleges within those programmes. As you do Undenominated Science I'd imagine finding a partner university in Germany is quite possible, it just depends on you asking your course heads and seeing what they can do for you.

    Good luck, and if you eventually do get what you wish in terms of study abroad, I hope you enjoy it, it's a great experience.

    Whats HK like? The reason I'm asking is because I'm thinking of doing a semester there myself :p

    If you still need more information, the best person to talk to in regards to DAAD is Martin R. from German department in Arts Millenium Building. He knows ins and outs of the programm cause he is an appointed representative. Im sure he will be able to help you and figure out your options.
