doesn't matter. What does matter is making sure that if you're taking the flagstick out to make sure that the ball stays in. i.e. make sure the ball has dropped entirely below the surface

When a player’s ball rests against the flagstick in the hole and the ball is not holed, the player or another person authorised by him may move or remove the flagstick, and if the ball falls into the hole, the player is deemed to have holed out with his last stroke; otherwise, the ball, if moved, must be placed on the lip of the hole, without penalty.

Ball doesnt have to stay in once it has been holed (i.e. once its all under the level of the green)

That happened to me playing a round . I chipped in from off the green ball below the level of green and pulled up flag quickly so the ball came out . I was then informed (wrongly ) now it seems that wat I had done was wrong . Kinda put me off for rest of round

I think amateurs have to remove the flag before the ball but the pros can take the ball straight out.

;)That's interesting. I was always under the impression it was illegal. Is it illegal to take the ball out of the hole using a putter. My dad often does this just to save his back but not sure if it is allowed or not. not that I think any of his playing partners would have the balls to call him on this.;)

I don't think this is illegal, however it more than likely will drive the green keepers mad if they see people sticking putters etc. into the hole.
There is a little 'sucker' that fits on the putter handle for removing the ball. If your da hasn't got one, buy him one!!
