    Hey,

So I have an exam tomorrow. There is no way Im going to do well in it. Id be lucky to pass it. If I dont show up tomorrow for it, will I still be allowed to repeat in August?

I don't want to drag my overall result down?

I feel if I give up on this exam now I will be better prepared for everything else.

    Afaik you can still repeat.

I'd really advise against doing that though. You never know how an exam can go and for all you know the repeat could end up being more difficult than the original paper.

    What year are you in?

    Ok, you SHOULD go.

But to answer the Q: it's fine, you'll get marked zero for the exam the same as if you attended the exam and drew pictures of cats.

Your results will come in the post, and you'll likely need to repeat the exam. The results in the post come with a Repeats form, you send it back with money or pay in person on campus, you get your repeat exam timetable.

Be warned: many modules you can only get a max of 40% in the overall module if you repeated the exam, so don't go relying on repeat results for pass-by-compensation marks!

If you've any department specific queries, don't contact your lecturer like everyone says. Contact the departnebt secretary - they know all and see all, and the college is run by them!

If you're too shy to ask them, someone in the Registrar's office or Examinations office will know.

If you're really really shy, you can just ask Seamus, your SU President at president@nuimsu.com

As always banquo's post is much more informative and makes much more sense than mine...

Thanks, I think its best that I dont go anyway.

I have been really sick all week and my doctor has been telling to to stay at home and relax. He gave my a sick note for last week and this week to try and stop me working so much.

So I havnt really been able to prepare, but I was planning to try and do it because sick notes obviously dont work for exams. But its just best that I count this week out and repeat this exam and another in August.

You've nothing to loose sitting it.
you might surprise yourself. Also a lot of colleges let you compensate from 35-39 so you never know.
A repeat will only be a pass.

Mmm, you sure about this? About the capping? Thought they didn't do that here...And I think the Pass by Compensation could still apply, no?

I'd say log the sick note, just so it goes on file that you were physically not well enough to attend.

The impression I've always had is that repeats are capped except for those in final year.

Defo log the sick note. In fact I'd log the note and still do the exam as it could help when it comes to marking/appealing. It has helped me in the past

Maybe it was just the Science faculty but I never got capped and did a fair few repeats in my day.

Same. I'm 99% certain there's no mark capping.

Depends on the department and some have started doing it recently, the fuppin' baxtards.

Page five suggests there are modules, although maybe only those assessed by large chunks of CA, where repeat marks 'may' be capped. It was definitely the case the year I did English, for the modules that involved 50% essay, that your repeat essay, no matter how good, could only earn 40% of that, even if you got a first. Maybe they changed that, but the point is there is provision for repeat marks being capped, it just depends on the module and department. If anyone's concerned, really the best person to ask is the department secretary.

Thems were the days. We'd never have passed if that's how it was!

    Hm, just a thought...

Is it really a good idea to sit an exam if there is a risk that you're going to pass it by a small margin?

I remember going to an exam and getting 43 %, and I wasn't allowed to resit it since I did pass it. Ruined my second year average :( If I hadn't attended at all, I would have had my august repeat exam and most likely done a lot better then.

if repeat results aren't capped (failed because of just failing - not sick, etc.) does it not make a mockery of the whole degree classification?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 490 ✭✭Wendero

Oh I agree it does - none the less it may sometimes be a smart move to skip an exam. Just sayin'.

of course it would, study the whole summer - well you know what i mean

but it couldn't be like that though, could it? you're basically getting the chance to be rewarded for failing.

also we'd need someone that's had to repeat in their final year to confirm, as it may just show as normal in the other years

i know from friends at other colleges it's capped at 40% but if you've a doctors cert. or a very good reason for missing it, a death say, the repeat would be classed as your first sitting, not effecting your classification

This might help. It's the guidelines for repeating in the autumn.
