I tried one out ( Im female btw) for muscle damage in my back after a fall, and didn't do any good, if anything it aggravated it , deep heat or thermacare packs work far better , but pricier tho, failing that hot water bottle.

I used one for a couple of weeks. It didn't so much ease the pain as distract the nerves for the duration of the session. Used it for about 20mins each time. What cured my lower back pain (reoccurring) was six visits to a physio who by chance also practiced acupuncture. Never had a problem since.

    TENS won't solve anything IMHO.

He's posted as a guest. Possibly a regular boardsie who doesn't want to be identified?

I'd say go to a doctor and see if movement is safe and then do back excercise, such as yoga and you'll be sorted fairly quickly.

i had a back operation 25 years ago and lately i have been suffering with referred back pain,it occurs at my ankle mostly at night and i cant sleep as a result.i had an mri scan and visited the surgeon who informed me that because there was scar tissue there was nothing he could do.i have tried phsio and acapunture and no better.have now bought a tens machine but not sure if i should put the electrodes on my back or ankle.any advice would be helpful as i am at the end of my tether.

It would be worth speaking with a physio on this. They'd be able to give advice on where best to place the electrodes and also what setting to use. A lot of TENS machines come with pre-set programmes, or you can manually set pulse width, etc.

There should also be a manual with it which would give you an idea of where best to place the electrodes if you do not have a physio you can contact.

Hi Finian, as brettmirl suggests, if the information provided with the machine doesn't help, it's best to check with a healthcare professional who'll be able to advise based on your own condition/circumstances. Boards doesn't permit medical advice so no one here will be able to comment.
