I hurt my ankle about 6 weeks ago and foolishly thought it would heal itself. Anyway I think I have a broken bone in it or torn ligaments.

I'll have to get an x-ray but dont want to have to give the doctor 50 euro when all he will do is send me for an x-ray? Should I just go straight to A+E?

Can't give medical advice, but iirc, a&e is free provided you have a referral letter from your gp, otherwise it's about €120. Not sure if you'll have to pay separately for the xray or not, depends on your prsi.
