Replacement crown

    Hi guys,

I have a crown (10/11 years old) that has become loose over time. There is no pain at all however above the tooth on the gum a small pimple will surface every now and then. I guess this is a small infection.

I have been advised that an implant is the solution but that will cost 2k+.

My question is, why is a replacement crown not an option and secondly can you suggest other solutions as I do not have a spare 2k laying around at the moment.

Either way I'm going to have the old crown out as I'm sure that's the best thing to do.

    Cheers

I had a crown in for 14 years and came loose, then lost it. I'm getting a replacement crown fitted tomorrow. Crown should cost you between €500-650 depending on where you go.

I would have assume a replacement could be done. However my dentist (great guy) said I needed an implant?

Is there a medical reason for this, anyone?

A replacement crown, is that basically a new crown repositioned or is it a complete replacement from start to finish.

You could have suffered bone loss around the crown due to the infection, which wouldn't make a replacement crown viable. Did he take x-rays?

If you're unsure get a second opinion

    X-Rays no.

To be honest I really like and trust my dentist but I guess a second opinion is the smart move.

Also, lets say I need a implant it will be Sept/ Nov at the earliest. Is it better to have the crown out asap.

Well if he didn't take X-rays he doesnt even know if you have enough bone
There for an implant, or what complications he could face placing it.

No in some cases. You really need to see what the infection has done to the site , you need X-rays before commiting to anything

If the tooth is getting gradually loose and has a pimple/sinus in the gum then there is possible a few different things wrong:

The tooth is dead and needs a root canal, the tooth/root may be too far gone to make this a sensible option, hence the implant suggestion

The tooth may already have a root canal that has failed... A re do root canal and crown may work but again probably not....

The tooth root may be fractured and loose, then unrestorable... Extract.... Replace

There may be really bad gum disease on this tooth as it is loose, the sinus is possible related to this but less common... Extract, replace....

There is an infection, redoing a crown does nothing for that and is doomed to failure.

Most likely the tooth is unrestorable, most likely needs removal and then options are, nothing/denture/bridge/implant....

Implants are usually the best solution but you have a loose tooth with an infection that has blown a hole in the plate of bone on the lip side of the tooth so is difficult. It is difficult already, the longer you leave it, the worse the site gets as bone continues to be lost...

Have an implant assessment and go form there..... soon.
Your dentist may not have taken the X-ray as he/she is not placing the implant, X-rays are necessary to diagnose and plan any treatment though....
    Good luck,
    OS
