    Hello.

I recieved offer from NUI Galway Department of Marine science, and i decide to study at NUIG in this September.

When i checked NUIG web-site, Marine science has some fieldwork during the course. It means do i have to do Swim in the sea?

I worry about this because i didn't learn swimming all of my life.

Please anyone give to me an advise about it!!!!!

    Thank you :D

No Im nearly 100% certain that you don't have to swim.

The fieldwork usually refers to your 4th year project, eg., {it could be} marine/ beach ecology {having to go out to a beach and do tests and onservations etc.}.

This is from what I remember my sister doing when she did Marine Science! Almost 100% she didn't physically enter the water at any stage.

I have just completed the Marine Science degree at NUIG.
There's actually very little fieldwork in the degree altogether, so no you won't have to swim in the sea. There was however a 'sea survival course' in 3rd year (You need to get the Survival techniques certificate if you want to be able to work doing ship-based research at any point).
This was mostly theory, with a couple hours in the swimming pool, but life vests are used at all times, and there wasn't really any actual swimming involved, more just 'not drowning'.

I suppose if you really didn't want the certificate you could opt out as we had to sign up for it, and I do not know if they are still offering this with the degree, I think it came pretty close to being cut due to budget and we had to prod a bit to get to do it on the basis that it was advertised as part of the degree course.

You should learn to swim, though.

Assume you have to swim and then learn to swim because swimming is fun, healthy and important.
