Damp/wet boot - focus

I have a deposit down on a 05 focus which is damp in the boot with water around the spare and a bit on the right. Carpet covering around is bone dry. Got it checked at a garage and they said it's most likely due to sitting up for 1.5 year. How can I be sure of this? Dry out the boot then wait to see? From googling water could be getting in via the rear light?

It could be damp from being sitting up due to a build up of condensation but that wouldn't usually cause what you describe. A leak somewhere is most probably the issue me thinks.

That's what I was thinking. Although it seems to be a very slow leak. I read another thread that some poster said he was going to fill the boot with water to see where it leaked out, I'm not so sure this is a good idea! I would like this issue resolved before I hand over the price of the car, no signs of damp/wet along sides. Only underneath the boot cover where spare tyre is. Middle and right side only left side is dry. Lights or lock maybe?

Lol filling the boot with water is deffo not a good idea. Your best bet would be to get someone to get into the boot with a torch and have someone else hose the car from the outside, this should pinpoint where the leak is coming from.

Good idea. Hopefully it's easily fixed. If I was to leave it in to mechanic to sort when servicing before purchase I wonder what it'd cost. It would depend on amount of time it would take to find the leak?

If they do what I said the leak should be found in no time. How long it takes to fix and the cost is a different story but if it's something like one of the back lamps it shouldn't take too long to sort or cost too much provided that it's the seal in the back of the lamp that has failed.
