They're really going up in price. Is there any point in jumping to 16Gb while the price is somewhat low? I've 8 at the moment. It would be 2 more sticks of 4 or 2, 8Gb.

as bloodbath said above 8gb is more than enough for heavy gaming..but if your into photoshop and heavy processor based apps at the same time 16gb is the way to go..but i would wait till the prices drop again.

Does anyone know the reason for the price rise?

A handful of remaining RAM companies who are cutting back on expansion of manufacturing capacity .

O right i see. I thought there was some other reason behind it.

    Thanks though.

What about future proofing, you still think 8Gb will be just fine?

Well it depends on what you want to use it for. But generally speaking 8GB is more than enough. If you're efficient with your RAM usage 4 is usually enough, but 8 to be safe.

Games are still 32 bit applications. That means they can address 4GB ram max.
Any sign of that changing and 64 bit becoming the norm?

Now the PS4 will have 8GB GDDR5, I'd imagine 64 bit will pretty much have to become the norm over the next few years.

I'd say some games are more memory intensive but for example running crysis 3 at near max settings, with a good few background programs, net browser with multiple tabs and several hd streams and I'm only using 4.5 gigs.

Chrome is quite a memory hog with multiple tabs open :D

For sure but you will be hard pressed to get near 8gb of memory usage.

    See my prior comment. :)

I'm always a proponent of saving 30 quid for a better CPU/GPU and getting 4GB instead if 8GB RAM. I have 8GB and I've never gone over 3.5 :P I'm a conservative user and rarely have tonnes of programmes running concurrently.
