    i have an 04 a4 1.8t 190 sport petrol and i'm buying a subaru legacy 07 2.0r petrol.

i rang insurance company to see about changing cars. insurance renewal is november so half way through. guy on the phone said i would have to pay €140 euro extra on the legacy as he claims it has higher insurance grouping and also a newer car. now surely the newer car thing is bo//ox because the a4 i insured with them over 3 years ago was worth more than the legacy today and in turn as the a4 aged my insurance obviously didn't come down.

i checked out the groupings for the two cars in the uk and the legacy was showing as a cheaper car to insure. so if they are looking for 140 for 6 months this would be an extra 280 for the year:eek:

just having a rant really btw i have a van insured with the same company and have been with them for about 5 years. also dont really want to change company as cost of new car is taking up my funds. anything i can do or is it a case of suck it up and pay.

The way I see you have two choices, 1. pay the increase now or 2. hold off buying the new car until November when you can shop around for a cheaper price.

This loading makes no sense, unless the Legacy is an import turbo it should be lower.

You could shop around now, and depending on the price take out a new policy and surrender your old policy. With 6 months approx left on your existing policy I'd expect you'd get a refund of 1/3 of your annual policy- (or as Bazz says suck it up or wait till November).

If the extra years NCB is worth more than €140 then stick with current insurer and pay the extra.

If not then scrap the 6 months NCB and move somewhere else for a cheaper price.

Or work out what 12 months at current rate amounts to with current insurer, then shop around using your current NCB and if you get better quotes go back to current insurer and see what they will do for you.

Insurance is a really annoying game that you have to play.

i think i might call to my local branch monday. might help talking face to face. if they try to charge me any extra i'll take my business elsewhere me thinks. fyi 32 full no claims, full dl and no penalty points. last year insurance was 480 for me and the crazy one.

for the craic i went onto insurers website for a quote using all my details except for my name and surprise surprise they are full of shi*e. quote for my a4 was bang on at 480, quote for legacy was 560 which i could deal with so should be €40 until november. i also put in a 07 a4 1.8t petrol and the quote was 480 aswell so the newer car spiel they gave me was balls aswell, so i will print the quotes off and bring them to insurer to see what they say. should be fun
