Quick question. Is the I phone or any phone not very reliable for elevation data on Strava? Do you really need a Garmin for accuracy. I think the phone is understating elevation gained. That or I really am a sh1t climber/cyclist.

No, phones are not accurate. The GPS devices with a barometric altimeter, such as Garmin 500/800 will give the best result. I usually find that the phone add about 30% more climbing than the Garmin and on a few climbs that I have calculated manually the Garmin is very accurate.

Yeah was thinking that. Was just out on a spin there and was comparing Strava data with other chap on spin. He has Garmin and his trip showed 550m of climbing versus my 350m over 80k so it's way off.

Yeah I agree my Garmin will give one elevation and my Iphone will give another, but strava can recalculate the Garmins elevation once you have uploaded it´.

Here is strava's info on it.

In my experience it's usually the other way around - the iPhone tends to overestimate the amount of climbing done - I think that's what Velopeloton was suggesting also!

Yeah I got that, I'm just choosing to ignore that because it really would mean I'm sh1t ;-)

I did a 160km spin solo last week and Android strava wss telling me I climbed 3500m. I did climb a lot but 2500 seemed about right.
When I climb with brother and he uses garmin there isn't that big a difference normally

What I find is when I just finish a ride Strava on the phone initially tells me a lot higher elevation. It then seems to do an auto correct thing a few minutes later. I have a feeling however this is still wrong. For example today finished ride It initially said 1200m of climbing it the adjusted to 350m. I know from previous trips and comparing with people on Garmins it's closer to 600m.
