Heading north from Cork on the N20 immediately before Rathduff there is an uphill section with an overtaking lane which near the top of hill is marked to merge left into the driving lane.

Friday night I was in that driving lane following a truck and there was a tailback, all the vehicles had moved into the overtaking lane, and were stationery or nearly so. The truck, with me behind it and van behind me sailed up the driving lane passing perhaps 50 or more vehicles and merged in at the end of it.

It's clearly marked that the overtaking lane ends whilst the driving lane continues, why would drivers queue in the overtaking lane when the driving lane was empty?

So basically, you (and few others) overtook used "slow" lane while rest of vehicles crawled on overtaking lane, is that right? :)

More than likely one fool following another assuming the slow traffic is in the driving lane and struggling to merge back into driving lane.

People are idiots and always drive on the right. Nothing wrong with what you did, as firstly you were driving in the correct lane, and secondly, it's perfectly legal to undertake on the left, if the right lane is moving slower. It's just like the very left lane on the N7. I like to think of it as my own personal chauffeur lane!

No they were driving in the driving lane.

If vehicles in the overtaking lane were driving slower that's not his problem as long as he isn't breaking the speed limit. He was just continuing to make progress at a steady speed in the correct lane.

That's my reading of it but I'm willing to bet a fiver that the thread offers no answer and attracts the Cavalry in force

You sure about that? I thought the only time you can undertake on the left is if you're turning left? That's the only time I'd do it anyhow...

    Yup! From ROTR:
You may overtake on the left when:

You want to go straight ahead when the driver in front of you has moved out and signalled that they intend to turn right.

You have signalled that you intend to turn left.

Traffic in both lanes is moving slowly and traffic in the left-hand lane is moving more quickly than the traffic in the right-hand lane.

I know that road and I know what marking are you talking about. 95% of people dont know what markings mean and they are assholes.

They redesigned those lanes in a way that when you get in, you have to go to to the left side to be on the main lane, but overtaking lane just goes straight. So all dumbasses just keep going straight, even if they are not overtaking.
The worst thing is when overtaking lane finishes. So it means those who are in main lane have to sort of "merge" to the right. By the book the one in main lane has the priority, but idiots in overtaking lane just keep on going and think that you are coming out of the slow lane. Almost had an accsident in one of these spots on n20, where fecker just kept on going. After beeped him, he was just like: "WTF ARE YOU ON ABOUT YOU LITTLE **** IN A BOYRACER CAR!"

I know they're the official rules of the road and that's that in fairness. However, I can't help but think its a wee bit unfair on folk who are using the lanes the way they are meant to be used.

For example, I regularly go across the M50 right from the top to the bottom and I "sit" on the inside at about 60 mph. Almost every time, I come across at least half a dozen cars who are jaunting along in the middle lane only doing about 50 when there's no-one in front of them. These cars should be in the left lane because they're not overtaking anyone. I just keep driving at my 60 and pass them. I know according to those rules you've posted than I'm not actually supposed to do that but fu*k it. Why should I have to slow down and then move over two lanes to get around these clowns and then move back in two lanes again?

They shouldn't be in the overtaking lanes in the first place! Rant over!

no they redesigned this lane so you have to pull to the right lane to overtake and move back to the left lane at the end of the 2 lane section...

i know the road and i travel on it every week. i have seen no end of stupidity displayed by drivers here. a lot move into the overtaking lane and do 55mph because there is often a speed camera around there.
