Does anyone know where to get a list of stocks that are heavily shorted? Or how can you find out what % of the share float of a company is shorted?

    Yep.
    Nasdaq stocks here:
    http://www.nasdaq.com/quotes/short-interest.aspx

and UK & Irish stocks here:
    https://www.euroclear.com/en/web-apps/stock-loan-data.html?ev=event2

I did spend quite some time a few years ago looking for a correlation between short interest/days to cover, and predicting future price movements and didn't come up with anything of use though. Anyway, good luck to you.

Thanks, its good to just keep an eye on these stocks for any good news. The likes of solar stocks, tesla, yahoo, RIM have seen massive gains in the last year due to being heavily shorted and then having better than expected earnings or outlooks.

Sorry for the newbie question but if I have a stock in mind I am thinking about shorting - how do I actually do this?

Check with your broker if any stock available to short. Pay borrowing fee, sell it and hope share price will go lower.
