All depends on how much insurance you want/need.

It also depends on what insurance you want.

I have PL, legal cover, gear insurance, plus some other bits. That on top of my camera gear and it all adds up. My PL is for €7.2m.

Get a few quotes. I find camerainsurance.ie good, and use them.

cheers Paul i was just wondering about the liability side of it really... i've approached a couple of places to get experience taking sports photos and a few have asked me do i have insurance.

just wondering on the cost of the liability side & is that the only liability type cover that i'd need?

my camera equipment is already covered on the all risks of a household policy covering the contents of my apartment..

Your gear is NOT covered under your home insurance if you are a freelance photographer. Double check your policy, but they will clarify that it is a personal policy and does not cover commercial gear. Since you are earning, you are then commercial. You need a proper professional insurance policy on your gear.

Again, what insurance do you need? Just Public Liability? What about professional indemnity? What about legal cover (to cover legal costs of any claims/actions)? Employers insurance? Also, how much PL do you need?

I couldn't give a cost, since I don't know. You would need to speak to an insurance broker. It's not a massive cost, relatively speaking. Your gear insurance is the biggest chunk of cost.

well i'm not freelancing as such as i'm not earning anything so i'm ok for the gear as it's personal use ....

really all i'm interested in is having the correct liability cover when sports organisations say have you got liability cover when you are on the side of a pitch if a player runs into you etc.

thanks again Paul for the advice much appreciated

Just be very very careful. Either you're amateur (not earning a single cent) or you're earning and need professional cover. Insurance companies love finding an excuse not to pay.

I'm sure you hope to make money freelancing, so it's no harm having the proper cover.

    Best of luck with it.

As Paul said get it in writing from your company that your gear is covered when you are out and about. If you do use it to start making some money from your work most companies exclude cover on your equipment at this stage under your house policy, but a small number of companies may give it. Again get it in writing if they say they will cover you.

Once your gear is covered properly get Public Liability insurance. This covers you for any injury you may cause to a third party or any property damage you could be deemed responsible for.

We specialise in cover for photographers (camerainsurance.ie) so it you have any questions feel free to give me a call in the office on Monday.

    Derek
