Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

I was wondering if anyone had done any Fas driving courses? I put my name down for the lorry driving course but the girl said there was a lot of names and I would be waiting a very long time..I ask her was there any other driving courses but she kinda blanked me. I already have the B license and I was hoping to get another license through fas..

What other courses are there and are they worth doing?

Hi Carzony, I applied for the HGV course through FAS in January 2012 and only had my interview last week in Carlow. It took 1yr 4mths  to get through the waiting list so be sure it's what you want and don't mind waiting. As for other driving courses I am not sure as I done the coach licence privetly

I might just go for the C license mate, Funny enough I put my name own for the hgv but that was about 2 years ago.. I wonder does the c license have a big waiting list?

You have to get the C licence(Rigid) before you can go for the CE licence (Artic) also most companies won't take on drivers with no experience,And most driving jobs these days pay in and around the min wage with some paying you less than the min wage.

I thought you had to have to get a C licence yourself first before FAS would put you through the artic licence?
As in pay for it yourself to show you had an interest in truck driving?

Didnt cost me a cent all i had was a full category B and provisional category C licence but all employers told me they needed experienced drivers so no luck getting work unless an employer takes a risk which most wont do,the course is quite intensive also

There is little to no point doing the course. Not because it is Fas but because there aren't enough jobs for the people doing it. They were even talking about dropping the course as it is just causing a bigger glut in the market.

If there was actually a demand for it they would increase the number of courses when they have already reduced them. The waiting list is meant to be a discouragement in itself. They are telling you that you should look at retraining to do something more useful.

Driving jobs are paying less since the English crowd came in a took on the contracts and reduced pay and conditions for drivers.

You are much better off considering another type of job because this does not have a great outlook for on-going wages or work. It simply is too easy for people to get into the market of what is a semi-skilled job that many people think they can do. Not saying anything about the work this is just the reality of it as a marketable skill.

No Job,No Experience = No Experience,No Job. And i'm speaking from that experience

That is kind of fair enough. There are a lot of unemployed experienced drivers. There are more than their are jobs. Why would you want to join a an overstocked workforce? It just isn't a good idea.

I know people in Fas and they get so many requests for driving courses each week and tell the clients it is a bad idea. People insist and they are put on the waiting list. I am sure some of the people in FAS have got sick of it and don't bother telling people it is a waste of time.

If you want to get a job truly do your research on where there is a good job opportunities and go for it. Obviously you will need some interest but driving is swamped so you should look elsewhere.

    Why?
The sector has an over supply. You train for jobs that are available. It seems like a waste of time, effort and money.

from what my cpc instructor and many others are saying an oversupply now will be an undersupply in 10 years,i probably have more qualifications than barack obama and still no work, but i'll review my options next month

So you are going to train now and wait 10 years and hope it works out?

You instructor has a vested interested in telling you there is work. It is a big problem with many FAS courses. They restrict the places because there is no demand and then a private company come along offering the same unneeded course. They then send the people in to try and get funding. The companies often telling them that FAS will pay for the course before they start.

People go into FAS and they turn down the funding leaving the people out of pocket. There was a private training company doing this with water meter installation saying of course there will be work all the meters have to be installed. People fell for it unaware the contract for installation had already been signed with them using the staff they had. In other words no work for the people training with the instructors saying there was and still getting paid.

There are lots of people who have no problem making money under false pretence.
