How tight should a jersey be

I'm a recent convert to the snugger forms of cycle clothing so I'm not entirely sure what's right but I'm struggling a little with jersey sizes. I've two different brand medium sized long sleeve jerseys - both are a little long in the sleeve but quite tight under arm (bordering on uncomfortable) and needs a bit of a stretch to zip up. I'm a little on the heavy side (5' 9" and 13 stone) but not a full Michelin man either. Both jerseys were mail order (one was a Cycle Superstore special offer) so I'd no direct comparison at the time. How tight is right and where does the comic appearance start?

Unless you look like this, you're doing it wrong....

Tight enough so it doesn't flap in the wind, but not so tight it's uncomfortable - that would be my advice.

If it is uncomfortable to wear then it's the wrong size, or maybe just the fit of that brand of kit doesn't suit you, but either way if you find yourself reluctant to wear it for one reason or another then it's a poor choice for you. Be sure to check what it feels like in the riding position though, some kit is designed to fit well when in that position and when you climb off the bike and stand upright it can feel a little uncomfortable as it'll drag in places.

As regards comic appearance, that's entirely subjective, but if your flesh oozes around and encloses the tighter parts of the jersey then whatever about comic that is wrong, wrong, wrong.

I thought that I was slightly corpulent but I suddenly feel quite svelte. A basis of comparison is a wonderful thing :)

Thanks for the advice - I'm a bit clearer as to what i need to look for now

for training it doesnt matter, racing fit should show off your belly if you have one.

At your height and weight you are probably at the upper end of medium in the likes of DHB, Endura (US and English brands) and at the upper end of large in Nalini (size 4), Castelli, Santini, Pearl Izumi (european brands).

If they were race fit then you're probably an XL or more, but race fit is for pros and ectomorphs.

Best thing is to work out your chest measurement and buy the size that suits your measurement. Ignore the letter printed on the label. But size charts can be off, so it's still a bit of a gamble. I end up sticking to the same brands once I work out what fits. In my case Nalini - size 4, Northwave - Large, dhb - medium. 5'10" & 12 stone, chest 39", mesomorph!

Or save money by going into your local bike shop and buy there after trying stuff and finding what works for you

IMO, torso hugging but not the "obviously wearing a jersey that's too small" look. It's a very fine line.

Sounds to me like a poor cut. This is why spending money on clothing is, for the most part, worth it.
