Eye exam question

Can anyone tell me where I can get a really thorough eye exam done? I'm not sure what kind of optician or eye specialist to make an appointment with.

I'd like to check that my eyes are working correctly in sync or test for any misalignments, but I'm not sure that the average eye test in somewhere like Specsavers would do this.

I live in Dublin so there are plenty of places around, I'm just not sure what kind of specialist or test I should ask for. If anyone can advise me I'd appreciate it.

Are you more concerned with misalignments? Have you any previous history? To be honest there are good and bad optometrists in every practise. I have found the optoms in Dixon Hempenstall on Suffolk Street to be very good. Aisling in Vision Express (can vary between Blanch and Henry Street) is also very thorough. Or even going to the National Optometry Centre at D.I.T where you can get tested either by students (free) or by a qualified optometrist. They would have more specialised equipment than most places.

    Thanks Daisies for your reply.

I've been having trouble with my balance, I'm waiting to see an ENT but that appointment isn't until August. In the meantime I'm seeing a balance physio and his opinion is that I may have migraine associated vertigo. I'm having a lot of visual symptoms that can be down to chronic migraine (without much headache) but I thought it might be good to get my eyes checked properly.

I have read that some people with balance issues or this kind of migraine have had results from glasses with prisms for misalignment or treatment for eyes not working in sync. So I'd like to check out these issues myself.

With the physio I'm doing lots of gaze stabilisation exercises because of an unstable gaze. These do seem to be helping over time but obviosouly I'd still like to make sure that my eyes are working well, just in case.

In Janurary I had my drivers eye test in Specsavers. When doing that exam where you cover one eye and then the other very quickly she did mention that there was a tiny bit of movement but didn't seem to bothered with it and I didn't ask any questions about it at the time.

I'm actually working in DIT and have heard that I can go get an eye test done in the clinic there, but wasn't sure if it was the correct place to go.

I just checked them out and they are expensive so I'd have to save a little, might be worthwhile to get a proper checkup. You found their eye exams to be a lot more trustworthy than the high street shops?

I would go get a thorough eye exam but if there is truly a muscle imbalance that needs prism you will probably be referred to an orthoptist (they work in the hospitals and you usually need a referral to see them). I would explain to the receptionist at the clinic in D.I.T and she might be able to slot you in for a person who specialises in eye movement. I think the final years run specific clinics for eye movement problems

I will do that, thanks very much Daisies.

One more question, can the clinic in DIT refer me if necessary or is that something that has to come from a GP? Sorry, I'm just a bit clueless about this stuff.

They can do it no problem. The only time you need a specific GP referral (as far as I am aware) is for A&E.

Thanks so much Daisies, I just called and made an appointment with them!

They'll give me a normal eye test as well as something called a binocular test to check for movement problems - because of the other test it won't be free as I'll be seeing a specialist, but it's affordable and I'm happy to pay it.

Thanks again, I appreciate the advice, I was lost looking at all the eye clinics and different types of eye specialists. I might be barking up the wrong tree, but having daily balance problems for the last five months is driving me crazy and at least if I get this checked I can cross it off the list of possible problems.

No problem. Glad I can help. I can't imagine what the feeling of the balance problems is like. I hope you get sorted soon. The staff in the centre are lovely.
