Probably wouldn't be allowed, especially the stripping and assembly of weapons. With regards everything else, coming in to recruit training with some knowledge of drill movements will not put you ahead in anyway. Recruit training is all about being taken out of your comfort zone and being pushed. I'd imagine the DF likes people that are like blank canvasses. Not coming in thinking they know this and that already. Ex RDF members would confirm that having previous experience doesn't get you anywhere, it only gets you highlighted!

All that is only a small part of the recruit training anyway. The fitness and the mental fatigue you experience can't be found in an App unfortunately. Never mind the need for extreme patience and a good sense of humour.

As you all know from my postings here I am an avid fan of anything military and one day hope to join. My idea for my project would be to design an application that would help new recruits go from civilians to Trained soldiers. obviously aimed at recruits selected for the Defence forces the idea I have in mind is basically a training manual. A slightly more advanced training manual in the sense that it could be installed on smartphones, would have video demonstrations of drill movements, safety procedures, stripping and assembling etc.....Anything that a recruit needs to know so they can advance to a 3 Star

They already have an app like this.

It's called a Corporal...and its designed to make sure that recruits don't ever forget any information relayed to them. ever.

I genuinely LOL'd there man, fair play! :)

IrishFeeney92, I admire your enthusiasm but tbh, this idea is going nowhere. It is not needed in any shape, way or form.

The only things that you can learn that would really help in training would be personal admin, ironing, folding clothes and how to shave without getting razor burn, etc. How to bull boots would be handy too.

Being good at the skills above will mean you have more time to yourself in the evenings. I found that at the start of recruit training you could potentially spend hours per night bulling boots and ironing kit because you need to build up the shine on the boots and the creases in the uniform. Towards the end of training you'll likely only spend about 20-30 mins doing it because the shine/crease would be properly developed and you only need to top it up in the evenings.

The faster you have your kit squared away the more time you have to relax.

Teaching things like drill movements and stripping/assembling wouldn't really help because you'll still be doing it just as much as everyone else and get beasted whether you know it or not.

Also most of that information is marked restricted.

Obviously fitness is important too, so maybe you should make an app geared towards building a persons physical fitness specifically for recruit training?

Righto, think I get the picture now :P

Considering this is dead in the water

    Anybody have any ideas? :D

Maybe something on rank structures, units, pay grades, rules and regulations, fitness requirments for entry and i.t.'s. and non classified info on weapons and equipment.

There are tons of very similar non classified apps for the us and British army's it's very feasible to make an irish one.

    Hi Guys,

basically im just looking for some experienced opinions/advice on a subject here. Im currently in 3rd year of College doing Computer Science. this week we were approached by our course coordinator and told to consider our 4th year projects already, he gave us advice in saying pick something you like, you will finish etc.

As you all know from my postings here I am an avid fan of anything military and one day hope to join. My idea for my project would be to design an application that would help new recruits go from civilians to Trained soldiers. obviously aimed at recruits selected for the Defence forces the idea I have in mind is basically a training manual. Just want to get some opinions, do you think the application is plausible and would be allowed by the DF, without breaking security protocols by putting information on the application regards to procedures or sensitive information. And if I actually could make the application who would I contact to get the ball rolling

All Opinions/suggestions are accepted no matter how harsh :P

    Cheers :D

Not to rain on your parade ;) , from a programming point of view, there is not alot involved in what you are suggesting. You might spend weeks putting together the content, but at the end of the day what will the app do other than display pictures, play media and take basic user input. An experienced app developer can churn out an app with that kind of functionality in a day or two. I think you might put a lot of effort into the content, and at the end of the day be left with a very small amount of code, which is the focus of the project.

OP, I think its important to remember this is a project for computer science, not a military course. While I like the idea of developing an app that is military based, a 4th year project must be innovative and original, which means if you develop an app, it should talk to the cloud as well and do something that other apps don't do.

Can I suggest you check out the Mil OSS project. Maybe you will find a project on there you could contribute to? There was an engineering task some time back to design an amphibious tank which I would loved to have taken part in if I had the time(but its not computer/software related).

Have a look at this booklet

    http://www.military.ie/fileadmin/user_upload/images/Info_Centre/documents/DF_Info_Handbook_layout_low_res.pdf

It's aimed at new entrants to the DF and has tonnes of unrestricted info. You could perhaps design an app that was an interactive version of the booklet, as the .pdf isn't exactly great for navigating on a phone or tablet. Just be aware the booklet is outdated, so lots of stuff is incorrect such as the territorial organisation, pay and pensions, contracts etc.

I'm clueless about coding, so if as suggested by the poster above, that it would be too simple, then perhaps your best trying a different idea.

    Best of luck.

What about an "Overseas deployment cultural awareness" app?

You will not need any permissions from the DF but could link it to areas where the DF are deployed. To be used as a post deployment aide of some sort.

It would be handy even for the likes of non troop missions. Specifically include basic structure of the host language, dialects, greetings, customs, significant religious rituals / events. Things you are allowed/forbidden to do in such countries.

For instance, for troops serving in Muslim countries when does Ramadan start/end. What are the diet limitations? etc etc.

    It could be expanded
