Joe Barry has a very honest piece in the Independent this week.
He reflects on his decision to plant trees in what 20 years ago was a very pro forestry political climate, and contrasts it with the increasing number of hurdles, the lack of consistency and rampant prohibitions placed in the way of anyone who now contemplates planting. I agree with his sentiments, and am appalled at the quisling behaviour of the Forest Service whose senior officers appear to be more concerned with getting to the top then in promoting forestry, as well people in the EPA and NWS who seem to have no practical understanding of how forestry interacts with the environment.
Donal Magner in last week's Farmer's Journal writes about a current draft by the Forest Service of penalties for non-compliance with various requirements. Would that a fraction of the effort in producing this tome were put into protecting the forest resource. It's also time for the IFA to represent the far forest owner effectively.

The potential of this island with respect to developing the forest base is phenomenal-from lumber to fuel to amenity and environmental protection. It's such a shame the current Forest Service leadership is lacking in vision.
