last Saturday i took a spin out on the bike from clontarf road to howth along the coast road..it was quiet easy cycling out to howth but on the way back it was much tougher..is the wind always against you cycling from howth to clontarf?does anybody commute that route to work every week?

If it's a west wind, yes.

    I cycle it every day.

It's usually against on the way into the city, and sometimes on the way back out again. It's on my commute. I get to experience headwinds quite a lot.

that's a cool cycle route to do every morning but it must be crazy when the weather is bad...
i took a spin around howth peninsula once i got to sutton cross...i took a right at sutton cross and cycled around the peninsula...is this the easy route or is it hardeer if you go the other way around the peninsula?

It's a nice spin but I'd never describe it as crazy! ;)

The Howth Village ascent is steeper but shorter than the Sutton side ascent.

Most times that I've cycled it Ive had an awesome tailwind going one way..but the return headwind is horrible, by horrible I mean soul destroying :|

Edit: before you head out check the wind direction and wind speed through google so you know what to expect! (just match the arrow with google maps)

Go out to Howth via the coast road....head back into the city centre/southside via Raheny and the Howth Road.

I also went out there on Saturday, it was a particularly easy ride out, tail wind all the way but as mentioned by others you pay for it on the way back to the city!

    That's it, admit defeat.

Winds been pretty bad last couple of weeks. Seems to change direction with the curve of the road, heading out it can feel behind you from the Wooden Bridge to St Anne's and then struggle to do 23k on the last stretch to Sutton. Couple of times last week or so I have bailed and ducked into St Anne's or Raheny but only if I'm happy with my effort around Howth. Personal rule lately if I only go over once then it's into the wind all the way home

It's my commute, some days are better than others :D

That reminds me, have to do Howth this weekend.

Cracking cycle, though, even if the winds are ridiculous. Did it in (I think) April, and was clipping a 35 average on the way out, then averaged 20 on the way back. Just brutal.

Yep, you'll always get wind in your face on that route. If you're doing it as a continuous return journey then you should be lucky enough to have a tailwind half the time. If you're commuting then the Ba$t@rd wind can decide to flip during the day and you can end up beating against it both ways!

The windiest day I experienced recently meant that I took 24 mins heading into town and arrived feeling fresh, but then took 34 mins going home (+40%!) and I was shattered after it :( It was brutal.

It was tough on the way in but the way home should be fun!

This feels like it happens most days!

It was fierce blowy on the way in this morning alright but as merc230ce pointed out above - it'll probably flip before the day is out!
