Opel Vectra very sore on diesel

Hi, a friend's Opel Vectra has recently become very sore on diesel. He is getting approx 80km for €20. I suggested it might be either the lambda sensor or the EGR valve, just wondering could there be any other cause for such high fuel consumption?
