How long to get a Death Certificate?

    Hi there,

I'm really not sure if this is the right forum, but I couldn't find any where else that seemed to fit the topic.

My Mother died suddenly a month ago. Her GP requested a Post-Mortem, which was carried out. However, we're still waiting for a Death Certificate to be issued. We contacted the Registrar and they said it could be 8 months before we get a Death Certificate. We're not expecting there to be an inquest, but either way, 8 months seems a very long time.

We've got an 'Interim' Death Certficate issued, but there are various legal issues that we can't sort out until we get the full one, and that's going to cause us a lot of stress and financial problems.

So, any idea how long it might take, or who I could contact to see how long it will be?

    Thanks...

    J.

Actually, I've just found the Bereavement forum, so maybe a Mod could move this thread there if that's where is such be? Thanks...

You can ring your local births, marriages, deaths register. Locall:1890 25 20 76 to find the nearest to you.

You should have gotten a Certificate of the Cause of Death/Death Registration Form from the medical practitioner in question which, along with other docs and ids, you take/send to the Civil Registration Service who issue the Death Certificate. We got my father's one within a few days. 8 months doesn't seem right at all unless there is something else going on like a criminal investigation or the like.

You could phone your local Civil Registration Office at 01 863 8200 for Dublin or 045 887 660 for Kildare for info.

    Thanks for your replies...

When we first contacted the Local Civil Registration Office, and told them that they're been a post-mortem and we didn't have the results yet, we were then told it could be up to 8 month.

That was a month ago, and we still don't have any results from the Post Mortem. Should we ring the Civil Registration Office again, or should we be trying to get in touch with whomever did the post-mortem (or their office) to see how long it will be before the results, as I believe the Civil Registration Office can't issue the Death Cert until they have those results?

    Thanks...

Well, we rang the Civil Registration Office, and they gave us the Coroner's number. We rang him, and he explained that it could be 2-6 months before all results are back and the report is finished. So it doesn't look like there's a lot we can do other than wait...

You need to get in touch with the GP or registrar, if the death occurred in a medical facility, who declared the death, for the form I mentioned earlier. Then you take that to the Office. The cause of death shouldn't be a major factor, as far as I reckon, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
