Disc harrows any good?

    I have a bit of reseeding to do on rushy pasture on clay soils would a disc harrow be any use to break down the surface or will I still need a powerharrow after it? Are mounted discs any good or is trailed the way to go?

    excellent for chopping dock roots and spreading them over the whole field otherwise ok, preferably on lift.

    Trailed doo a better job.
    I always found mounted too light to cut the ground properly.
    Usually give 3 to 4 runs of a trailed disc at right angles to each run and follow with a powerharrow mounted seeder.

    If both machines are properly set up you will be left with a good level seedbed with little or no stones.

    Trailed is better, only thing about discs that I don't like is that the soil can be left very fluffy afterwards. Even with rolling after sowing the field seems to be more prone to poaching. Anybody else noticed this?

    If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.
