Cable and stud finder recommendations?

I'm doing some DIY work at the moment and want to avoid hitting any cables buried in the walls.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably priced cable finder that actually works?

The internal walls in the house are largely block and plaster rather than plasterboard, so the wiring is in plastic ducts buried deep in the plaster.

You can generally tell where the cables are based on the position of sockets and lights and switches.... There are ocassions when a wall is used as a run way from level one to level 2 but you would be very unfortunate to hit that....

The wiring's 1970s but to pretty high spec and was upgraded in the 2000s (new panel, etc)

Picked up a Black & Decker one quite reasonably priced and it was useful as the cables weren't quite where I'd expect them.
