would the Isuzu dmax 3.0l be the most reliable 4x4,
I'm thinking of buying a 06 model and seem to get good reports

'most reliable' is a hard question to be fair.

around the 06 era the 3.0 isuzu engine would certainly be up there in the top 3, Ive a 2010 d-max based on the refined 4JJ1-TCX and have had 0 problems with it in 90,000km from new.

turbo diesels are only as reliable as their maintenance so whatever you do buy find a well minded example with a full service history.

    What the top 3 Eric?

In no particular prder but ive never heard any complaints about

    The isuzu d-max 3.0 (4JJ1)
The misubishi pajero 3.2 (although its a bit thirsty)
The hilux 3.0 (i know toyota have got a bit of a downhill rep woth the d4d engines but they still seem to be fairly bulletproof)

I had a 3ltr trooper, 2 3.2 ltr pajero an a 3.0 non d4d landcruiser an I can say I will never biy a trooper again good in a field but the engimes are ****e worst engine ever was told this buy everyone I no 2

Thats the 4JX engine your on about, different beast alltogether the 4JJ1 in the d-max is nothing like it. That trooper engine was terrible

    That trooper engine was terrible

People say that the 4JX doesn't even resemble an engine, let alone work like one :pac:

If you want reliable, the 3L 1kz Toyota Diesel from the 90's (Surfs & Landcruisers) As one of the lads says : 'They'd burn turf mowld'

    Brilliant engine, endlessly reliable.

The 1kz Toyota engine is super.. If a little lacking in grunt and getting harder to find a less abused one. The D4D units are excellent too.. The only issue ever was an injector seal on a limited production run. My 03 has 210,000 miles and not a bolt on the engine touched bar timing belt.

As for the most reliable... That goes to the 1HD Toyota engine (4.2litre 6 cyl diesel) from the 80 series Landcruiser (and 70 series in OZ and SA).. Those things will be what the cockroaches drive after the apocalypse

Had or driven freelander, discovery, santa fe, trooper, dmax and landcruiser.
As you're looking for reliability the freelander is a joke, and the trooper is good for fields and horrible on the road.
The dmax is smoother but still very tractor like on the road, and has got caught out off road once or twice. (And been rescued by the landcruiser)
same for the discovery, lovely drive, good off road but reliability again is criminal!!
So in my experience I'm down to the santa fe(which isnt a proper 4x4, no low box) which is reliable but slightly limited off road, and the landcruiser.
Smooth and comfortable drive, more than capable off road and never a major issue with it. In fact its rescued a dmax and discovery in fields and in snow before!!

In fairness the off road ability (in terms of fields & snow etc,) of any 4x4 pretty much depends on what tyres are on it,

Anything on A/T's or M/T's will come off better in most cases than something on road tyres..

So I personally wouldn't guage a lot until the parameters are reasonably equal...

A/T tyres on all. Except the discovery that did very well for itself on road tyres but got caught out the odd time, in places where it really could've done with them in fairness

Ive a 04 santa fe. Very reliable, ive no issues with it. Friend has one, same year, for years now. Towing trailers into bogs no hassle. It is permanent 4wd, no low box. They're the only draw backs really. Seems fairly capable for it's size, it is only a 2 litre

Maybe worth considering but are there any issues with the 2007 newer models,
what are they like on the diesel, good mpg??

Was thinking of a 2005 nissan xtraill 2.2dci but hear they give some trouble

Haven't driven a newer Santa fe or driven an xtrail!!
I'm looking at a few newer santa fes, window shopping mostly. I'm now needing a vehicle that can do a bit of off roading, and has 7 seats.

The old toyotas are hard to beat. I've a '94 75 series with the 1HZ engine. Got 310K Km on it and is still sweet. Not the most power but has taken me across an entire mountain range on road tyres.

Yes! old is best. also on the odd time! it may breakdown, chances are,you will be able to fix it yourself, you will not need some EXPERT to plug in a computer to it!!

for the the record, I drive an 89 corolla, guess what? it never let me down!!
