My wife just got insurance in her own name for the first time ever and as a result I have to now contact all the companies I was with for the past 5 years to get a letter to say she was insured on my policy.

First I called Tescos who I'm with now. They couldn't have been more helpful, will send out the letter, told me who I was with previously from my no claims and even gave me my policy number for my previous insurer to help me along.

Then I called 25plus. The phone call cost me €2. I was with them for two years and to get this letter to confirm that I had a policy with them will cost €20 per policy. So they are looking for €40 to send out two letters which are essentially receipts to prove that I paid them money in the past.

Such blatent gouging is terrible IMO. Just a word of warning to anyone thinking about going with them that they will charge you for absolutely everything that you expect to get free from your insurer.

This is how these type insurance companies can undercut their rivals when offering cheaper premiums by charging for other services. It's the Ryan Air business model. They are not the only ones doing it either. Always read the small print about hiden charges before taking out any policy.

I know that a few of them charge a fee for changing insurance over temporarily, but trying to charge €40 for a letter to say that I had already paid them for two years claims free insurance is just plain wrong.

Edit: Oh, and this charge is a recent thing and wasn't in place when I took out the policy.
