Comedy Sketch Shows

I listen to a couple of shows from BBC radio (usually Radio 4 and in the form of podcasts) created by UK comedians purely devoted to comedy, sketches etc.

Just wondering are there any similar shows (hour long or just segments of regular shows) on Irish radio? Other than things like Gift Grub and Oliver Callan shows, which are generally based on impressions as far as I know.

Can't think of any off the top of my head, although it's something that RTE should definitely look into - follow the BBC tradition of developing a comedy show that can translate from radio to tv.

Something along the lines of a satirical news radio show a la 'On The Hour' would be interesting.

I think radio comedy shows can be great regardless of their potential translation to television (for example, the Chris Morris "Blue Jam" show worked much better on radio in comparison to the TV version "Jam" imo). Also, they can be done with very little budget and considering the quality that BBC has produced throughout the years, it's an obvious avenue that RTE, Todayfm etc should try.

There's certainly plenty of material for satire given the state the country is in and the ever present gob****es that repeatedly get elected. I'd even like to see a sketch based format, be it absurd/original or maybe even "Irishism"/stereotype based shows (as it's all RTE seem to aim for these days)

There isn't much at the moment. There was 'Irish Pictorial Weekly' last year which made the jump to Television. 'The Emergency' ran for a few series on Newstalk but it seems to have ended. Apart from that the only one I can think of are Oliver Callan and Mario Rosenstock's efforts.

It's a shame when you think how good (and influential) Scrap Saturday was back in the day. There doesn't seem to be much appetite in any of the Radio Stations here to develop new comedy. There isn't really an established Radio Comedy tradition here like there is on Radio 4. If I was a writer or performer that's where I would be aiming to get on air. They have a huge number of comedy programmes, and have a great archive of classic programmes. They even have a topical programme where anyone can submit material and get a start, Newsjack. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00kvs8r. Radio 4 is like an academy for comic talent.

If you made some time available you could go to Youtube choose the shows etc you like and convert to MP3.

Mod please delete if I'm breaking T&C's.
