In the market for a new TV - Smart or not?

    Hi,

I just moved into a new place and there's no TV. I've borrowed a 32" and it looks pretty small in the room so I was thinking of getting a 42".

I havent really decided on a budget yet, but don't really wanna go over a grand. Maybe 800-900.

From what I've seen so far, there is a huge premium on Smart TVs, and I'm curious is it worth it, or would my money be best spent elsewhere? My main problem is that I like to have all the bells and whistles on electronics, so I can see myself going for Smart/3D/wifi etc. :o

Also, if it has built in wifi, is that enough to stream films from my computer to the telly, assuming it supports the encoding?

    Thanks.

For approx 100 euros, you can add all of the functionality that a smart tv has to any Tv, with the likes of the google tv box, boxee, wdtv, Roku, etc.

These boxes are also much better supported in terms of firmware and in terms of format support.

So, depending on the price premium, I would be inclined to skip the smart tv and look at these boxes.

Thanks andy1249 - you make a good point.
But what about the likes of gestures or skype?
