Other than lamping what is best time for foxes
Before its starts getting dark or just before sunrise
Reason why I ask is a fox I've seen and been after I have seen him out first thing in morning and just as the sun is setting
He's a big lad and I'm sure he's been shot at before so what time is best to get him

I have found it really depends on the area. Are the foxes living close by or travelling there to hunt? Iv found places where they live tend to have activity late in the evening or early in the morning. Ya said you have seen him a few times, maybe bait him for a week and try get an idea of a routine.

This time of the year you can catch them anytime day or night

I'd try the times I've seen him anyway chances are if he has be shot at before he will bolt with the lamp. As said already bait him and try figure out a routine.

Their most active at dawn and dusk and from experience you will only get the one chance to lamp the whore, but this time of year their very active. If you can identify the area where you see him most it might be possible to locate his den but they have massive ranges on account of cubs. Keep laying food in one spot he will get complacent. The night you do decide to get him wrap your bate in chicken wire and tie or dig it into the ground it will give you some time but not much if he's experienced.

    Thanks folks
Yes he is always spotted in this one field or the field beside it so I'd say its were his den is
Also folks he will be shot with the shotgun so any advice on gettin closer to him

Iv never done it but i was watching a show where a guy was filming foxes, he wanted to het very close so he set up a hide about 60-70 yards away from the den and left it there for a few days so they got used to it being there and he was the. Able to spen alot of time in it filming them up close. Always fancied trying it!

I've watched a few of Roy luptons vids on fox shooting
That one is very good and given me a rough idea of how to go about getting this lad
The call he is using sounds a lot like to one I made
Saturday il be trying so hopefully have some results
    Thanks lads

What load will ya be using?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭dodderangler

Eley 4s should do the job
    What would you recommend
Given il be trying to get this lad as close as 15- 25 yards
If Roy Lupton can do it don't see why I can't :)

Ah yeah they will do the job alright. I always like to have a few BB's around, they will knock a fox at 40 yards or so

Thought you were an expert on shooting foxes, how come all of the novice questions all of a sudden?

Thought you were an expert on shooting foxes, how come all of the novice questions all of a sudden?

    When did I say this
And I'm pretty sure asking about what way to get a fox during the day with a shotgun is not a novice question
Same as previously a lad asked about gettin a crafty fox
That wasn't a novice question either
Not all foxes are the same or easy
As said in op this lad is big and has been around a while and im sure ges been shot at before so me askin best way to get him during the day is not a novice question

Thanks to rest of lads that posted advice btw
Hopefully have results on say as il be going in morning and if fails later that evening
    Thanks again

I like the challenge of hunting fox with the shotgun noting better then dropping him with my old rough and ready 12g baikal o/u she never let me down, iv found wind and good knowledge of the land is your best friend, it really helps knowing where his den is. Some camo to. Iv also found that their less alert early morning i suppose they been out al night, i use 4's but found 5's go deepest in winter don't no why maybe its the coat. Anyway fair play for throwing the question out their its hard to no everything about everything and the likes of boards is the place to tap the mind of other hunters and their tactics even just for the note book. Best of look with ginger the 4s will make a nice job of him at 20 yards_:-)

i would go with the BBs, if hes as cautious as you say he is he may not come as close as you hope... if you could make something as a decoy that could maybe draw his attention away from any movement would be a plus!!
IMO id wait until after the next heavy days rain as he will have to go pouching for food again and may be drawn in easier.!!
    i hope this helps
    good luck

I seen videos on YouTube of lads using what looked like a black or a white strip of cloth or material on a stick blowing in the wind while they called with tenterfields
I wonder is that worth a go trying it like that
Anyone know why the cloth is supposed to imitate

Might be just to draw there attention and distract them and give the fox something to focus on.

    ( maybe )

WE DO QUIET A BIT OF FOX CONTROL IN OUR AREA. POULTRY FARMS AND LAMBS AROUND. WE ARE SEEING A LOT MORE FOXS DURING THE DAY THAN WHEN WE ARE OUT LAMPING. THE CAGE WITH A CARCASS OF CHICKEN IN IT WORKS A TREAT AROUND HERE.

    :):)

Whats the story with the cage trick?

I used bait them with rabbit quite a bit.. wrap them in chicken mesh and stake them down.. gives you 10 minutes of a busy fox..

I've got a fox cage. Maybe 7x3 in size. Fox goes in door closes. Best works with chicken carcass and bits thrown around outside. Could take a few days but always works with lamp shy foxs.

Meant to let yas know how I got on on Saturday
There was other lads out that evening aswell but were not hunting but were out sighting in their guns
Anway i Called for a while and a fox showed interest and made a line towards me about 3 fields away but disappeared into some gorse and didn't come out
So I'm going to go lamping for the big lad on Saturday with my mate and try him on shotgun at night
After looking at another thread of a problem fox if saturday fails I may give baiting a try
