Just a quick question for people that have attended the notification to marry appointments. How long do they usually take? And were you seen at your appointment time or was there a long wait?

I know these things can differ greatly depending on the day etc but I just want to get a rough idea. I have an appointment after this and I want to make sure I can make it or move it back etc.

    Thanks

No wait for us. It took maybe 20 minutes/half an hour. Had a couple of forms of ID, birth certs, the fee and filled out the paperwork, confirmed witness names and DOB (these can also be changed on the day anyway). Its not that onorous.

We were in and out in about the same time. The process was started off via post as I was living in London at the time. Just make sure all your documentation is in order (maybe call ahead to double-check). Very, very easy process, so don't worry.

It was very quick, we were very straightforward, both Irish, no previous marriages etc. We got seen on time and were out in about 15 mins

Oh that's great. Doesn't sound like we will be there for hours anyway.
I'm English not Irish but I have my birth certificate stamped so shouldn't be any problems.

    Thanks!

Are you living in Ireland already, OP? Just wondered as I too am English, but wasn't living here at the time, hence the reason why we had to start the process by post. All we had to do was make an appointment three months before our wedding.

Yes, when I said stamped I meant the apostille stamp :)

I wasn't asked to provide one. All I did was bring the copy of my birth cert, along with the other docs.

Do you have to make an appointment or can you just go in?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,411 ✭✭✭ABajaninCork

You have to make an appointment NOT LESS than 3 months before your planned wedding. Think the earliest it can be booked is six months before.

we'd to wait in the hall for about 10-15 mins til the registration person was available as it was just after lunchtime. I think they can take as long as they want
You defo must have an appointment.
Took around 15 mins. I also had to get an apostille stamp on my foreign birth cert. You'd be very lucky if you get someone who's willing to overlook the lack of one. You both have to be there to sign the paperwork if it's all in order, otherwise you'd have to come back together. This was quite difficult for us as we wouldn't necessarily have same time off that easily.

Regarding the letter of freedom, Do i need one from the parish i was born and raised in, or the parish i've been living in for the past 6 months?
    Have heard conflicting reports?

That has nothing to do with registering intent to marry. Its a religious requirement.

Nah, my local parish gave me a form, I got a family member to sign it and any priest to counter sign it. Depends on the parish, so give them a shout.

Our meeting took about 30 minutes, mainly because the guy in HSE was so chatty. We had all the forms ready.

Then the same guy called a few days later to say he made a mistake on the form, the church had been in contact to flag it so we had to go in a second time to sign a new form. So just make sure you scrutinise the information they put on the cert before you leave!!

We had ours just over 8 months before our wedding.

no wait, in and out in about 25 mins - this included a look at the room that we are getting married in.

I used to think it was no more than six months beforehand too, but when I read properly, what it actually says is that if you don't get married on the date on your licence you have six months after that date to get married, otherwise you need to make a fresh application and get a new licence.

You definitely need an appointment to go in (make it sooner rather than later as some offices are very busy).

We were seen about 10 minutes after our appointment time and it took about twenty minutes. It only took that long because their printer was acting up. Just be sure you've everything with you.

I just had a thought. How do they prefer you to pay the €200? Chq, cash or card?

Did you check on the HSE website?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,463 ✭✭✭loveisdivine

Yeah, it doesn't say. Just says you need the prescribed fee of €200 (non refundable).

Id rather pay by card, but I don't wanna turn up and then find out they only take cash. On the other hand I don't wanna withdraw €200 cash then have to pay by card.

Fair enough. I'd call them and ask.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,484 ✭✭✭username123

I paid by cash AFAIR. I was afraid they wouldnt have a card machine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,644 ✭✭✭✭lazygal

We paid by card in Grand Canal.

Hope bumping this is ok - I plan on ringing the HSE on monday to make an appointment to register our intent to marry. We were really pro-active and both ordered copies of our birth certs online from the HSE website to do this, but upon checking the website it says "original long form" birth cert is needed. Do these (official) copies count or must we dig out the actual ones from almost 30 years ago? The copies are A4 sized but with all the info, and from memory my original is a long piece of paper that folds up on itself (hence the "long form" confusion!)

I'm sure mine is safe at my parents, but OH has moved around a lot and isn't sure where his might be which might delay us a bit till it turns up. I'd also prefer not to stress my mother out about finding mine at the moment! If anyone can shed some light on this I'd really appreciate it

The copy you got from the HSE website should suffice.
