Rexton 2.7 D engine.

Hi Lads, I read and post (sometimes) in the Motors forum, but I felt I might get a better response to a diesel engine problem here.
    Story so far:
I bought this fcuking 2004 Rexton 2.7 dt about 6 months ago, for the (too cheap) princely sum of 2.5 k. It had 170,000 miles on it, but very clean outside, (resprayed) and while I expected to have to put a few bits into it I thought another 1500 would have me a reasonably servicable jeep. I have had plenty of better jeeps in the past, but this was what I could afford at the time.

First off, she was slow to start when the weather got a bit cold, and after blaming the glow plugs, eventually we discovered she needed injectors. Ok, sore at 1200 having already put a full exhaust on it, along with a few other small bits.

Since then she has run ok, lovely to drive, so I invested in 4 ATs for it, and thought I had a jeep for the next couple of years.

Lately the engine management light has been coming on when driven a bit on the motorway, and she has been going into limp home mode with no power. When the engine is switched off, this corrects itself again, so I didn't mind it too much. Figured it was an ECU issue, and decided to let sleeping dogs lie.
She also blows a little bit of black smoke, - normal enough for 180,000 mls.

Until today. The bitch left me on the motorway near Ballinasloe. (I currently live in Dublin)
Started with some extra engine rattle/ noise, then severe power loss, but no engine light as would be usual, then clouds of white smoke, overrevving, and then I had to use 5th and the brake to cut out the engine. It now starts, but I dont want to make the problem worse by running it.

I'm thinking turbo, but the nacker I bought it off had insisted the turbo was just done before I bought it. Having said that, he said nothing about having had an injector or two out of it, which he had, as we discovered when doing those.

    Questions:

Could the Exhaust return valve be responsible for the engine light which was intermittently coming on?

What is a turbo going to cost me (supply and fit)?

Would you fix and sell or fix and hope that thats the end of it, - I'm thinking dual mass flywheel will be next?

    Sorry for the long post....:(

that 2.7 block is based on the 2.7 mercedes design in the troublesome w163, some of the symptoms ive seen showing up on ML's with high pressure fuel pump issues, check all the fuel hoses and try running a rich mix of dipetane through it, see if it helps at all.

I changed the battery thinking this was an issue but now it won't start at all.
