How many marks needed to pass?

I am doing a chemistry degree in UCC and for most of my modules this is written in the book of modules..

Assessment: Total Marks 100: End of Year Written Examination 70 marks; Continuous Assessment 30 marks (Practicals 20 marks; Coursework 10 marks).

Pass Standard and any Special Requirements for Passing Module: 40% Students must attain not less than 40% in the Practical component of the Continuous Assessment. For students who do not satisfy this requirement, the Practical mark, calculated as a percentage of the total mark for the module, will be returned.

Does this mean that if I get 20% worth in the continuous assessment I only need to get 20% in the summer exam to pass?
There seems to be a lot of confusion in the year..

Yeah it looks that way to me, but it wont be 20% of the exam, you'll have to get at least 28/29%

Yeah, there is similar confusion in our year...

It says nothing in the Book of Modules about having to specifically pass the May exam. Therefore, I presume that a 40% aggregate (between the exam and continuous assessment combined) would be sufficient to pass, but I am open to correction.

Apparently it can vary from college to college. Can anyone clarify the UCC policy on this please?

Its a Department Policy, not a UCC Policy. You'll have to ask within your own department, however I think its only medicine/dentistry and similar that need to get the percentage in both exam and continuous assessment. I think all SEFS courses are done on an aggregated system.

But double check for your module with the module co-ordinator/lecturer. Email them.
