Hello,im a qualified school guidance counsellor and teacher.I feel I need more training to supplement my current role or if I decide to work privately.I dont think I could go back and study 4years psychology and then further training, it seems to be a long and expensive route to take.Ive done a foundation course in counselling with the IICP a few years ago before I did my guidance qualification.Im just wondering has anyone any advice or recommendations on what course to do. Im thinking psychotherapy or educational psychologist

What are you aiming to do? Do you want to be a psychotherapist?

I was thinking psychotherapist is probably the best route.Counselling psychologist is a long expensive route.Im not sure if you need to have a psychology degree to become an educational psychologist. What type of jobs are out there for psychotherapists.I see alot of mention to HSE but hadnt realised there were pschotherapy jobs in the HSE.

I'd imagine most training programmes in educational psychology require a psych degree as an entry requirement.

    Here's the UCD course. http://www.ucd.ie/education/graduateprogrammes/taughtprogrammes/masterofartsineducationpsychologymaep/

There are various roles within the HSE held by psychotherapists and counsellors ranging from the Addiction Services to services for those who experienced childhood sexual violence.

However, there are a lot of people looking for work and in most cases the HSE are not taking people on.

I think my team has lost at least 8 therapists over the past 4 years as people retire, however, they are not being replaced.

However, by the time you finish the psychotherapy training things may have changed!
