Questions about lenses for bird shooting

    Hello all,

I currently take my bird photos with a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens.

I'm looking to upgrade to an L series lens with a longer focal length. My questions are:

    - Is there much benefit upgrading to this 400mm lens? I shoot mainly during the day so aperture isn't a huge concern of mine.

    - I like shooting handheld also and rarely go "proper" bird shooting i.e. with a tripod. At what focal length could I get up to and still hold the lens comfortably. It looks like when you get beyond 300mm, they become a bit too heavy to be lugging around. Any advice around this? (I'm a big guy so can walk around with fairly heavy lenses.)

    Thanks in advance,

    K

I know this is a long lecture but I think it is really on point about what you are asking, canon lens for bird photography. I know there is a lot about dream lenses like 600 F4 but there is also some good information about shorter lenses.
If you regularly find yourself at 300mm and wanting for extra reach then you may benefit from a longer lens. Another option may be to get a 300 F4 and a 1.4 extender (420mm f5.6). It would give you more flexibility in terms of focal length and would add IS which the 400 F5.6 lacks

As far as I know the extender won’t work with your current 300. It would have to be a L series telephoto.

There is a Tamron one that works in the US for about 200$. (I usually use b & h's chat support functionality to ask questions about products and then buy them elsewhere cheaper! hahaha.)
