Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous [MTV]

After recently graduating high school, young Zach Stone opts out of a college to pursue the New American Dream: becoming famous with no talent whatsoever.

Quite liked this actually.. but I'm a fan of Bo Burnham in general.

But he's a real love-him-or-hate-him type of personality. His confidence can often come across as cockiness, and he'd be the first to admit it, but there's no denying he's actually damn talented..

The show definitely has promise.. while the pilot has it's share of misfires, it definitely was a step above MTV's comedy offerings as of late - from crude comedy (RJ Berger) to another crude comedy (The Inbetweeners).

Did you watch any more of this, Basq?

I just saw the pilot. I'm a Bo Burnham fan, been following him for about 6 years now, ever since "My Whole Family..." exploded online.

I had seen the trailers and promos and went into the pilot worrying about how he would sustain the character for the whole episode without it getting annoying but was pleasantly surprised by the occasional breaking of character back into the "real" Zach Stone.

There were some brilliant throwaway one-liners and I laughed out loud a few times. It's not surprising with such a quit wit like Burnham, I guess.

It's kind of ironic that MTV, of all channels, would show this, seen as it's satirising the reality shows they make their money on.

The way it's done is very smart and I'm looking forward to seeing more.

I'm up to date bar the last two..

.. it's been somewhat hit-and-miss but still more impressive than most of what MTV US dishes up.

There was a great gag in the second episode when Zach was talking about how he had decided that he wanted to be famous for his musical talents and had set up a band with his friend. As they were riffing, if you looked closely at the background, they had the wikapedia entry for "music" open behind them.

It's not being renewed for a second season, which is a pity but hardly surprising given the atrocious viewing figures.

I just wish another station had taken it rather than MTV, it might have taken off more.

Buzzfeed did a pretty good article about what might have gone wrong.
I think the age gap between Burnham’s generation and MTV’s younger viewers, however slight it may seem, actually had a huge impact on how Zach Stone was received. The current MTV audience has grown up watching talentless “personalities” earn fame and fortune doing nothing: to them, what is Zach Stone parodying?

On to bigger and better things, Bo!
