Recommendations for a new HDD/SSD

Hey Folks,

Effectively I'm looking for a new HDD (or an SSD) for my computer after my old one packed it in last week. It had been giving me trouble on and off over the last 6 months, and I reckon the root cause of it was physical damage after it fell out of place in my tower when I was moving it a while back.

Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone could recommend the best bang for buck HDD/SSD, preferably 1TB+. I don't mind which website I order from but I've used scan.co.uk in the past and found them very good.

Just in case it matters, the rest of my computer spec's are i5 760, Nvidia GTX 460, 4gb RAM and 550w Corsair PSU.
(I'll be doing a GPU/RAM upgrade in the summer :pac:)

You could also get a smaller ssd with hdd. What motherboard do you have?

Hmm looks like the a smaller SSD and a larger HDD would be more prudent alright with by budget.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte H55M-UD2H (old, I know :P )

That motherboard has no sata 6gbps ports so the ssd won't be running at its max potential. It will still be faster than a hdd but worth taking into consideration.

Put it this way: I had my SSD running on a SATA2 port for a couple of months. The first time I realised this, was when I ran a benchmark to test it. :P

Ok, thanks for informing me. I'll still go for the SSD & HDD as I'll be doing a big upgrade (mobo, GPU) later this summer. Couldn't last without my computer until then... this netbook is driving me mad. :pac:

Also, how difficult is it to put in and install the SSD & HDD? Its three years since I've built anything from scratch and had quite a bit of help at the time.

Very simple. One cable from your power supply, one from your motherboard.

You're best off clean installing Windows if you can.

First install only the ssd + dvd drive. Go into bios and change first boot device to the dvd drive. You'll be prompted to press a key to boot from the windows disc. Once windows is installed, plug in the hdd. You might need to initialize it before its recognised

The green drives are a bit slow if you plan to use it for any games/programmes. Might be worth getting a caviar blue or seagate barracuda instead if you can fit it into the budget.

Yep, I'll be doing a clean install.

I have a few of those in the 3TB variety. Nice, stable drives so far.

Im running a Samsung 120GB 840 Series on my new build and its a dream. Got a WD 1TB blue drive which is going well at the moment too.
