Great article there. I would not want to be the person replacing Mr French in the Observer. I have Ace in the Hole in my DVD collection.

I think its a very interesting film about madness in the media but I would never call it one of the greatest films of all time. Still its very absorbing.

Kirk Douglas is a fantastic actor though.

I used a still from it on the Guess the Screenshot thread the other day and someone got it very quickly, so it does have its fans.

Yes I think that was me:) Fab movie from a fab Director.

Actually I've just spent the last couple of hours splitting my sides watching One, two, three. Another of his hidden gems. They truly broke the mould with Mr. Wilder, a real genius!

Actually after reading about Philip French I'm going to dig out Ace in the Hole this weekend and give it another look.

Watched Ace in the Hole earlier today. Great acting performance by Douglas. A truly nasty character. Not one redeeming feature in his makeup.

Its actually a much better film than I remember or maybe better on a repeat screening.

Ironically since I last viewed it the trapped Chilean miners saga happened with which it shares some similarities. We all could recognise the president of Chile by the time they had got the miners out - it did wonders for him.
