as project honours maths is IMPOSSIBLY HARD ive decided i would like to do an intensive summer course in maths. im 16 and a ty student. my queston is where would be the best place to go for one of these courses? i know bru na pairce do one, how helpful are these courses? will it honestly improve my ability to the point where i wont have to give an hour to maths homework each night and still come out with the grades. sorry in the thread title i meant to say intensive maths courses, my keyboard isnt working the best.
IM IN THEV LIMERICK AREA. so with regard to private tutition, it needs to be in the limerick area, but i am willing to travel for courses.

Since you're in TY now, I presume you're doing the Leaving in summer 2015, is that right?

So when do you want to do this intensive course? This summer or summer 2014?

I'd never heard of Bru na Pairce til I read your post, so I looked it up. I also had a quick look at the Inst of Education (Leeson St) website. Both of these are offering courses in summer 2013 that are geared towards LC 2014. It would seem logical to me that in both cases (and for similar courses elsewhere) they would be assuming that each student enrolling would already have covered at least half of the LC syllabus with their own teachers before coming into the class, so I doubt that the course would be suitable for someone coming from TY, where you're unlikely to have covered any of it.

What did you get in Junior Cert maths? I'd say that the best prep you could do for LC maths would be (firstly) to make sure that you know the stuff you've already been taught inside out and back to front (ie that you know it well enough that you could get an A if you were to do the exam again tomorrow) and then (secondly) to start looking ahead at what's on the LC syllabus so that it's not all brand new to you when yoo start to do it in class.

Mind you, what would I know? I got a Higher Level B in Inter Cert maths, and then got 16% in my Higher Level maths exam at Christmas in 5th year, and then dropped to Ordinary level.

I'm not sure where to begin with this post. The first thing I suggest is to give maths a go before condemning it. You say that it is "impossibly hard" when I presume you havn't really done much of the Leaving Cert course yet. You are only at the start of the journey to the Leaving Cert. You need to be more poistive.

Having said that, maths, like any other subject isn't for everybody. Do the best you can and then at least you can say you could do no better.

With regards an intensive summer course, I can't really comment. I have no experience or knowledge of them. However, all the summer courses in the world won't replace genuine study and hard work..

Whatever you decided to do op, I hope it works out for you.

Since you are in TY now, what are you doing in maths? I assume in your junior cert you did not do any of the new course. When you start in fifth year next September, your teacher will have probably taught most of the course at least once and will be in the best position to advise you on where any help would suit you best.

locum-motion is right, imo. You should get back into thinking about and revising what you did before and get sharp at the maths you do know. Of course, even if the course never changed, there will be new topics and more advanced work in some of the areas you did before. Don't start off assuming you can't do it. Any maths course demands work if you want to get good grades. It's important to start at a good pace and not leave a whole lot of work until it gets too late and you're under a lot of pressure.
