We had the ballcock and valve replaced on the main water tank. It was badly corroded and blocked up. Plumber had to cut it off. He asked have we ever had our water tested, but tested for what. I wasn't in when he called so I wasn't talking to him, herself never thought of asking.

TBH we have replaced several kettles and 3 washing machines in the 10 years we have lived here. I had thought we might need a water softner, but looks like not.

Any ideas what we should be tested for, who does it and idea of cost?

If you're going through kettles and washing machines chances are you're in a hard water area. I bet your electric shower has gone belly up a few times too. Is there lime scale deposits in your kettle?

You can have the quality of your water tested by the Public Analysist in Dublin
    http://www.publicanalystdublin.ie/en/
    telephone 01-6612022
Give them a call and they will talk you through what you need to do.
If you are not based near Dublin, I am sure they can direct you to your nearest lab.
