People Power across Europe

Who can't have been struck recently by the surge in votes for parties which seek to give ordinary people back power from a ruling political elite. Right across the EU from the AfD in Germany, to UKIP in the UK and in other countries too.

In the UK, there will be only two parties fighting the next election, and the story is the same across the EU. One consists of the Tories, Labour and Lib Dems who, not just on Europe but on a whole range of issues, have become almost identical. The other is Ukip, the only party trying to fight for the people of Britain against a “political class” that, in alliance with Brussels, had hijacked our democracy. It’s the same in Ireland where Fianna Fail Fine Gael and the Labour party have similarly become almost identical.

Thanks not just to the increasing powers of the EU, but also to those of individual countries own officials, we are now being ruled in a new way.

After talking to ministers and politicians of all parties across Europe, I had been struck repeatedly by how they seemed to have become mere ciphers in a vast, unaccountable bureaucratic system that appears to have lost any contact with reality and the concerns of ordinary people.

The sense that we are now ruled over by a political class cut off from the rest of us in a bubble of unreality has become the most conspicuous feature of our politics. Above all, we see it in the all-pervasive power of that weird system of government centred in Brussels, which has so blatantly now lost people’s trust across Europe. We can see it in Finland, Holland and, above all, Germany, with the startling emergence of the AfD, now scoring 20 per cent and more in the polls, and with UKIP in the UK taking 27% of the votes cast in recent polling.

Lets hope this is only premonitory tremors of a real earthquake to come, as the people of Europe begin to rise up in protest against a zombified political class which has been allowed to rule over us without challenge for too long.
