Is the maximum permissible weight of the trailer less than the gross weight of the Towing vehicle? And is the combined weight of the two less than 3500kg?

If yes to both, you can tow it on a normal B licence. If no, you need someone with a full EB licence as an accompanying driver at the time.

Amount of axles is completely irrelevant.

    As BX19 said.
If your trailer gross weight is greater than unladen weight of towing vehicle or combination of gross weights of both (trailer + towing vehicle) greater than 3500kg, then you need either full BE licence, or driving permit for BE + person holding full BE licence accompaning you.

    Aye, you're right :pac:

I saw an advertisement for EB ADI lessons in a equestrain center today

"Did you know you need an EB licence to tow a double axle trailer?"

Seems the ADIs don't even know what's the law. Or they're scaring people into lessons....

its under all them but im fairly sure that because it is twin axel that I need a full eb licence to drive it on my own? or have ye proof that one can drive a twin axle on a normal licence if under all these weights?

Axles have nothing to do with it, it's a myth. See section O2.

Assuming that's between 00 - 06 model, their unladen weight is most likely below 1400kg.

It's quite unlikely you will find double axle trailer with gross weight less than 1400.

Would something like this not work for him then?

    This trailer is 1400kg GVW.
If car unladen weight is less than 1400kg, then you can't legally tow this trailer with that car holding only B licence, even if trailer is empty.,

Well then, what about this 7x4 single axle with a gross laden weight of 750Kg?
    http://www.mrtrailers.ie/products/trailer_range/general_duty_trailers

    Can be towed on a B licence by a B7 A4 1.9TDI with a Kerb Weight of 1390Kg.

Just depends on how heavy your tractor mower is OP!

this is the trailer in question. im a bit confused. we will say that the carstowing weight is 1400kg. The trailer surely weights no more than a tonne? I don't have the exact figure of it. I suppose I could ring the company Tuesday. Lawnmower is only a 36inch one so 300kg at most?

It's the design gross weight of the trailer you need to know, not the physical weight of it as it stands. This is usually stamped onto a plate by the hitch or on the body of it. You'd be doing well to find a double axle with a dgvw less than 1,400 kg. There's no figures on the Murphy's site, but a similar Ifor Williams trailer has a dgvw of 2,700 kg, which can't be towed on a B licence.

You might be better off with a single axle trailer, it would be perfectly fine for a lawnmower. I tow a single axle transporter on a B licence :)

E: There's a single axle trailer that's also 8 x 4 on the Ifor site, which has a dgvw of 1,400 kg. You'd be fine towing this behind an A4.

You are supposed to have a driver with you, who holds full BE category.
