Sarcoptic mange

MY GWP has been diagnosed with Sarcoptic mange. Over the past month her tails gone bald and the rest of her coat has gone patchy.

Brought her to the vets today and he gave her a drop that goes on the back of her neck. He gave me another dose for the springer that shares the run with her, but she is showing no signs of mange but I dosed her to be safe.

I think the GWP must have picked it up from a dirty stinking fox that has been hanging around outside. Shooting the bastard isn't an option, I'll let have to let him be, the neighbours would go mad.

Does anyone have any experience with mange, what other precautions should I be taking. I'm going to give the run a good dose of Jayes fluid and probably have to was the kennel out aswell. Is there anything else I should be doing.

Would you think about tapping and giving him a trip somewhere so he could have a quiet chat with your shotgun?

    Just thinking out loud here.

Okay lets just get one thing straight here, whether the fox is responsible for the mange or not it doesn't matter.

My priority is to cure the dog and make sure the other dog doesn't get mange. I'm looking for information/advice on what the best treatment for mange.

I could kill the fox in a heartbeat, but I'ld probably get in deep ****e with the law as I live in a built up area and thats not going to solve my problem.

What happens in 6 months time when your back at the Vet getting another dose.

Trapping in built up areas is legal as far as I know.

What age is the dog? If its old it probably won't fight it off easily. Iv always kept German shepherds (best fox dogs i think, they have a primal hatred for predators) and about 10 years ago one got it and like you said i got a little bottle of stuff to put on his neck and it cleared up in about two weeks but coat took awhile to come right. what i did from then on was wash them with anti parasite shampoo the vet will put you on to a good 1. A poor diet and age will contribute to infection but saying that my dogs always got good grub but he was old. The fox probably was your source especially one eating rubbish sure who no's your neighbours are probably feeding it. Post in the pet forum those nuts have all the answers:-)

    Thanks Valerossi.

Yeah there's a bunch of donkeys over the road who are renting and I don't think they are putting the rubbish into bins. My dog has gotten in the habit of making a dash for it and going for a feed over there. The fox has the same idea or it could be from tails I had in a container in the shed, who knows.

The dog is 6 years old now. I feed them Arkwrights complete 18% protein and 7.3% oils & fats.

I'll see how the drops go, what was the name of the shampoo you got?

At first the vet gave me some sort of dedicated shampoo especially for this infection but now i use standard insecticidal shampoo made by beaphar think herself buys it in tesco. Do you no of a sheep farmer that would leave your dog take a short swim i didn't do it because German shepherds have strong jaws ha.
Not a dog dietary expert but maybe give the dogs a raw egg and boiled rice once a week just to up the protein and crabs if their working i have to feed mine royal canine 70 euro 15kg not worth it if what your feeding is working for them its just my dog has a pussys gut ha.

Im not sure one of my permissions offered to dip him when i mentioned the mange. I think what ever dip they use treats al mites anyway so its worth it if you can dip him, some farmers will have a tank on the property all year.

A good shampoo to use is Hibiscrub.
The vet will definitely have it and if you anyone working in a hospital or a doctors surgery, they should be able to get their hands on it.I have never seen it for sale.
Failing that, any good antbacterial shampoo(e.g, Carex) will work but it is not quite as good.
The sheep dip is a great idea but with the shampoo you can wash the area every couple of days.

A friend of mine keeps hounds, he had trouble with mange a few years ago. A old vet gave him a dip called tac tic, he uses it every few months and never has a bother with mange again

Whats the best way to keep the dip, would you just fill a barrel of water and just dip the dogs in the same stuff every few months?

I used to mix some in a bucket and wash the dog down with a sponge and it worked well

How i was mine is with a bucket of whatever and a light brush like a dust pan brush just cause it really works it into coat and skin. Its gentle enough not to hurt them but hard enough to remove dead skin and anything trapped in the coat.

mange is caused by mites that live in the skin, you have to kill these before the hair will grow back, vets are expensive, and don't cure mange all of time, the best permanent cure that kills all the mites is a mixture of white vinegar and borax powder, and much cheaper than vet bills,if interested in this method, ill post the recipe and what to do

    That would be great.

    That would be great.
ok i cured my springer 2 years ago,got the borax powder from ebay, could not find any here, anyway buy a couple bottles of white vinegar, more than one wash down is needed,i used one and a half pints warm water, half pint white vinegar, dissolve 5 table spoons borax in the vinegar, mix in warm water, wash all over dog, repeat every 2 days, red skin will go white when mites are dead, new hair will appear soon after,i washed my dog in an old bath tub with stopper, using a sponge, the wash that runs off the dog can be soaked up again with the sponge and re used until the dog is completely wet, mix fresh batch for each wash, took about 12 washes, should notice a difference in skin tone and scratching after 4 treatments,i would try keep dog away form others for about 2 weeks, but if that is hard to do,then just wash any dogs that sleep together, this wash worked great for my dog.the borax kills the mites under the skin, the vinegar is acidic and opens pours to allow borax under skin, using undiluted vinegar would be to strong, hope this helps,in fact i know it will:).ps if you have any more questions, please ask

Had a foxing terrier that was rotten with mange years back - the above worked a treat.

    Hibiscrub does nothing for mites.

The Advocate spot on is less than a tenner and very convenient. It also treats roundworms and gives four weeks protection against harvest mites, fleas, ticks and lice. I think it's the way to go. You can buy it over the counter at the vets if you're a client.

I've seen greyhounds with really bad sarcoptic mange make a full recovery with just one application of Advocate. If you want to be doubly sure, you can repeat the application after four weeks so you know the mites at all life-stages are now dead.

I thought sarcoptic mange was only spread by direct contact so unless the fox lies around when he's about and the dog lounges on the same spot shortly after, it's hard to prove the fox is the culprit, especially if he doesn't look mangy himself?

I wouldn't go putting your dog through the sheep dip, he's already had an effective treatment with the spot on and you don't know the concentration of the sheep dip or if it might be toxic to the dog or irritate his skin. Poor lad probably won't thank you for the bath! :D
