I know that a lot of us here like a good challenge when someone comes along looking for help so I thought I'd point you in the direction of another source of Genealogy puzzles over on Reddit.com

Here's one that popped up today :

    http://www.reddit.com/r/Genealogy/comments/1dn8ek/hit_a_wall_trying_to_locate_grandfathers_irish/

Person trying to get a birth-cert for his grandfather, Thomas Moore, born in Cahir/Ardfinnan Co. Tipperary in or around 1908. He has him in 1911 census but unable to find anything else.

Thought it might test a few of the regulars here :)

Registration district for Ardfinnan is Clogheen - but just one Moore birth in the district between 1901 and 1911 :
    Name: Alastair Moore
    Event Type: Birth
Quarter and Year: Oct - Dec 1908
    Registration District: Clogheen
    Volume 4 / Page 454

since he was born before marriage mentioned he might be this birth ...
    Name: Thomas Murphy
    Event Type: Birth
Quarter and Year: Jul - Sep 1908
    Registration District: Clogheen
    Volume 4 / Page 462

shanew, I'm embarrassed to share the same forum as someone with powers such as yourself!

Your Thomas Murphy has a mother Bridget and father 'unknown' :)

And just for the record :

The actual birth cert may have more info but the father 'unknown' could be a strong hint that this is the guy.

shanew, that guy confirmed that Aug 23 was his grandfather's birthday.

actually thought more Thomas Murphy births were going to show up in the district, so a bit of a lucky break with that ...

Some photos of Clogheen workhouse here, also mentions that some records for the workhouse are held in Thurles.
