Obviously you have to have completed the 12 required EDT lessons before doing your practical test, but can you apply for the test before you've completed all the lessons?

I should be finished all my lessons before the end of the month, just wondering if I have to wait until then to apply (considering the waiting time is approx. 10 weeks).

Yes, you just wont be allowed to sit it. But you can rescudule the test date for one after your expected completion of lessons.

You can apply for your test now. They will half process the application. That is to say, they will take your money and put you on a holding / waiting list. Once your 12 lessons have been uploaded you can get a test date. Go to the RSA site and search for 'My EDT' to check what lessons have been uploaded for you. If you are in a hurry to sit the test. You can apply to take someone elses cancelation. Also, you must have held you learner permit for 6 months.

I put myself on the cancellation list. Took about 4 weeks instead of 8. Obviously you don't get to pick your date or time, but I got 10 days notice of mine.

If I apply for my driving text once I receive my learners permit will they just put me on hold and then issue me a date 6 months later or would I be better off just applying for the test in 6 months?

You'll be put on "EDT hold" as soon as you apply. That won't be lifted until your 12th and final lesson has been completed and uploaded into the system by your ADI.
By the sounds of things you don't yet have your learner permit. Be patient, walk before you can run would be my advice. I know you're probably keen to get it all done but it will all fall into place for you as you go. Good luck with it.
