Hi all . I'm currently planning to build my own car trailer in the next week or two . I also may build a smaller trailer ( single axle) , for carrying lawn mowers , etc etc . I'm just wondering is there laws regarding trailer size or standards that have to be kept to if towing a home made trailer on a main road ?

Yes, since 29th Oct 2012 all trailers made here for use in a public place must meet EU standards and be granted type approval by the NSAI. I suspect that effectively puts an end to DIY trailers.

I though you only needed type approval if selling. There are minimum requirements alright.

What colm said...the newer regulations only apply to those who supply trailers.
If building your own then the older regs apply.

Having said that it will often work out much cheaper to buy an older trailer (needing a little work) than building your own.

Just realised my own old trailer needs some work done on it, before I can use it again. What are the laws regarding old trailers?

+ on on slimjimmc above.......any trailer made after Oct 12 has to be Type Approved - even a one-off. But. And there's always a 'but'.... in typical Irish fashion, the guidelines issued by NSAI here all specifically mention 'for sale' or 'on the market'. It doesn't actually say what the situation is vis-a-vis trailers made but NOT for sale or NOT 'on the market'.

In this link HERE, page 2, para 4, it says " While category O1 and O2 trailers do not need to be registered for use on Irish roads, from 29th October onwards they will need type approval in the form of ECWVTA, NSSTA (National Small Series Type Approval) or IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) before they can be sold."

....which begs the question: if they are not/never to be sold, then.................what ?

I dropped them an email just now, to clarify, be interesting to see what they come up with.......... :)

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Got an official reply today: the exact wording is sale or first use, so ALL trailers require ECWVTA. There are insurance implications if it doesn't.

    ...exactly - you can't.

That's but one reason why these new rules came in - to make stuff traceable and to make identifying it straightforward.

The fact there is no way to prove when it was made is as good as having a time machine :D
