Just installed linux for the first time.
Having issues trying to get wifi working.
basically the laptop dosent recognise the wifi module at all anymore since I started messing with drivers.
before it at least recognised the card and picked up the network but never actually connected

the details are in that link the wifi is a broadcom 4313

What version of Mint are you using? The Braoadcom 43xx series are known as problematic, I read about a fix somewhere on the Mint forums, but I cannot find it now.
I use Mint 13 KDE and LMDE but I don't have a broadcom 43xx series card, so mine work perfectly.
Please don't give up on Linux Mint or Linux generally, once you get it working, you will never look at MS Windows again, it's so much better.

after a lot of reading ive found out my wifi is an unusual model thats not widespread and isn't supported by the normal drivers and that I need to install the brcmsmac driver from here.
    http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/brcm80211#Broadcom_brcmsmac_driver
my last problem is getting them from the repositories,
I cant find a download link on the page so im presuming it has to be done through terminal but I havn't any idea what command is needed.
Im on the 64bit mint 14

It's the Broadcom wireless 43xx series adaptor that is the problem, more precisely, as you pointed out, the drivers for it.
I'll take another trawl through the Mint forums, there is a driver fix there somewhere.
Maybe if you try Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE), it may work better, and is much quicker to install than any of the Ubuntu based releases, or even try Debian 7 "Wheezy" released only yesterday, although LMDE is based on it.

You've probably already checked, but here's what I found, a lot of woes with that network card

Considering Mint is a tweaked version of Ubuntu, I don't see how that would help.

It tells you on that page what you have to do:
Copy brcm/bcm43xx-0.fw and brcm/bcm43xx_hdr-0.fw to /lib/firmware/brcm (or wherever firmware is normally installed on your system).

According to here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx#Drivers_available_in_Ubuntu your card is supported by the proprietary driver.

If you have wired internet access these seem to be the instructions to follow: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx#A11.10_.28Oneiric_Ocelot.29_-_12.10_.28Quantal_Quetzal.29
