Ubuntu ram issue.

I have a PC w/ ASrock 970 extreme 3 (AMD) that has 16GB ram, yet when I go to my OS (ubuntu) it will only see 8GB, but when I fire a command at the OS it reports that there are 16GB ram as does the bios, but it is not "released" to the OS..

its the 64bit version of 12.04, I'm currently doing some lab work on KVM and really need the additional 8GB

    Any ideas!

Check your bios settings for sure. I had weird missing ram issue recently and it was bios based.

OP, open a terminal, type "free" and send back the results here.

you might want to ask this question in the ubuntu forums too, perhaps in the hardware section

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,931 ✭✭✭PrzemoF

Could that be your problem(last post):
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11068190

    another one with "dirty" contacts:

    http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?3042-BIOS-says-16gb-installed-but-only-8gb-recognized

If not, send "dmesg" and "sudo lshw" output.

OK, that's not the whole dmesg, but there is definitely something wrong. Could you do:
    dmesg > /tmp/dmesg_log

and post the content of /tmp/dmesg_log somewhere? (pastebin.com or zip and post here)

lspci, lsusb might be useful as well. I'm going to find if there is a bug filled against your hardware.

So there is 16GB, I hope that complete dmesg explains a bit more.

Does your PC show 16GB in BIOS?

I just found the other tread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056932726

Read this[1]: it might be motherboard/ram compatibility problem. If you have only 8GB in BIOS the problem is not really linux related, so I might not be able to help.

Have you tried to remove some memory? Maybe one is faulty and then blocks the other 4GB.

Another option is to try memtest+

yeah cheers for the reply, have tried memtest and it reports 8gb IIRC ! may have to RMA.

Have you the latest bios? I still suspect it's at least potentially a bios issue.

I'd say it is some sort of hardware issue. I bought a new CPU cooler a while back and when I was reseating my processor I accidentally managed to damage one of the pins in the socket bed. The result of this was that my computer was able to detect all of my RAM, but only some of the slots worked. While the BIOS showed the full amount, both Windows and Linux could only use half.

Luckily in my case it was a simple enough matter to bend the pin back and it has worked correctly ever since. In your case I'd recommend checking each RAM stick one by one to see if you can isolate it to a motherboard or RAM issue, and then RMA.

    asking the stupid question ..

with some workstation BIOS's you can mirror RAM so 16GB physical would translate to 8GB usable

as always while troubleshooting weird stuff , load setup defaults / factory reset in the BIOS

first thing I would do is remove & reseat the ram.
I've had experience, when installing new ram, that it seems to be there (reported on boot) but was not recognized by the OS. After much head scratching it turned out that I hadn't correctly installed the new ram modules!

thanks, does DDR3 need to be put in assigned slots?

I was thinking/talking about when I installed more memory my laptop(s) and it's different from a desktop but the rule of thumb there was match the colours. The memory slots are usually colour coded - so if you are installing two modules install them in the same colour slots. I see (from your lshw output) you have all four banks full of 4GB modules so that probably doesn't matter.

When I said reseat all I meant was; sometimes the memory module can look like it is installed but it's not 100% if you simply remove it and then replace it making certain it's fully inserted.

But since even the OS believes you have 16GB perhaps the memory is physically correctly installed. Worth a try though - if you've not already removed it and reinstalled.

Long way, but might reveal something .....

take out all 4 memory cards and using each one in turn, place it in each slot individually and boot the OS.

You can then do them in pairs and in different paired slots if applicable.

Compare the results .... some differences should show if there is a problem with either a memory slot or a memory card.

Tedious I know ..... particularly all that booting and checking .....
