Tyres for large saloon / coupe

I'm in need of a set of all season tyres, my current car is a 2002 Volvo S80.

I will be looking at spending about 70-90 per tyre and want something suitable for large saloon or coupés as I may be changing to a CLK.

I do a mix of motorway and national / by road driving so grip and braking power is high on the scale, Road noise is second.

A mate has new Dunlop Blue Response Summer tyres and can't get over how quiet and the grip they have : Now his old tyres were like slicks so any new tyre would feel better and being summer tyres are the strictly a summer tyre??

So has anyone any feedback on all season tyres for large motors or can summer tyres be safe for our winter

Very few "all season" tyres on the market here. And they are only slightly better than summer tyres in snow and ice imo. So best going with a set of standard summer tyres that offer plenty of grip in the wet and if you want buy a set of winter tyres if you live/drive in a place that sees alot of snow and ice during the winter.

I bought an avensis about a year and a half ago when i got it it had a bridgestone a goodyear a hankook and a nexen tyre on it all new. The nexen was rubbish and i changed it before it was time to as it caused me to spin the wheels too often.
Bridgestone goodyear and hankook were all grand.

Since then I now have bridgestones on the front and hankooks on the back. Happy out with them both

your budget isnt much for tyres in that size . your probably looking at mid range
best of them would be Uniroyal Rainsport 2 or Hankook S1 evo or Kumho Ku31

personally id spend a bit more and get something like Continental ContiPremiumContact 5

Do you plan on bringing the tyres with you when you change the car?

    Haha no :p

The Volvo is currently for sale so if it does not sell by the time the advert ends I will keep it and put on a new set of tyres, if it does sell I will buy a set for the new car to either fit or to have ready to go on.

Now to answer your burning question as to why I'm selling

The Volvo is manual and I want to go back to auto because its the only way, My Fiancée is starting to drive so seen as how she will have a small car for herself I decided to sell my vovlo and buy something like a CLK etc for my up and coming mid life crisis :p

OK so were clear now and, back to the tyres :D

SpannerMonkey the Continental ContiPremiumContact 5 seem to be along the same specs as the Dunlop BlueResponse yet there a good bit more expensive.

Have you had much experirmce with the Continental?

I got a set of Regal (Dunlop) 235/45/17 with re-inforced side walls (94W) from oponeo.ie
Paid 61€ per tyre, delivered to my front door.
Decent enough tyres but not all season.
I would't be bothered with all season. It makes more sense to get spare set of second hand wheels and put winter tyres on to them.
Even part worn winter tyres will be better than all season ones.

I'd second the RainSport 2's as an all season choice, nice balance between grip and ride comfort, great wear on them and came out top in aqua planing tests, ahead of some much pricier options(including Michelin who make them).

Seem to be getting great reviews but 11000 mile on a vectra  Id say the S80 is slightly heavier.

They say putting more air in will help the soft side walls, is this true in your experience?

i have the continental sport contact 5p on my Bmw 645 and they are superb , excellent grip and unbelieveably comfortable . with fantastic wet braking, downside is the price and a little louder than the old pirellis . i had dunlops before and was not overly impressed with them . also had pirelli P-zero . good all rounder but a tad hard on the road . Bridgestone Potenza and turanza are ok ish kinda average at everything
Goodyears asymmetrics i love but dont think you can get them in that size
michelin are decent of course but big bucks

I've had them on 3 cars now, Saab 9-3 convertible, 2008 Lancer and Mk2 MX5. Saab and Mitsubishi have kerb weight of over 1600kg and have ran up to 15,000 miles on each, same tires. A slightly higher pressure will give you added durability in that regard but I did not find the sidewalls problematic in any sense. My old Toyo's/Kumho were pants in comparison, much quicker rate of wear and more road noise. As other posters have pointed out, there is no "ideal" all season tire, however I believe the rainsport comes as close as possible, with no noticeable drawbacks.

Picture of tyres and there Specs from customer reviews

these are the ones i ment sport contact not premium contact http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Continental/ContiSportContact-5-P.htm

and you have to take into account on these reviews that people are reviewing them on the price too so lads with expensive tyres are often expecting too much and lads with cheap tyres will give them amazing reviews even though they might be terrible in comparison . and you have to compare those tyres that only have 3 reviews with those that have 100 + etc

but all in all any of them are far better that 80% of the tyres on irish roads today

Yea well the vast flood of used tyres have destroyed the new market, they may be cheap but its false economy.

Is there any independent company that actually test tyres in all condition and gives.

Thanks ill check them out now

I have to disagree with that. I've personally seen a huge increase in damp tarmac grip, and on frosty tarmac grip as well, with my Vector 4-seasons (I had to order from abroad but it was well worth it) compared to the range of tyres I have gone through on my A4 estate tdi.

OP: €70-€90 isn't a lot of budget for decent tyres in that size range. CAn you push that budget out to get better tyres? The S80 is not the best car at letting you know what is going on at the wheels, so it may be better to get better rubber to minimise the possibility of anything untoward happening?
